President William Ruto was on May 13, pressured to intervene after Evelyn Cheluget replaced Alexander Muteshi as Director General of Immigration Services at the Interior Ministry.
In a leaked internal memo, Alexander Muteshi, director of counter-terrorism at the National Intelligence Service (NIS), stated that the changes would take effect on Monday, May 15.
The departing DG announced his departure, urging the staff to give the new boss their full support in her new role.
Muteshi replaced retired Major General Gordon Kihalangwa in 2020 who had been appointed as a PS by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Please provide the new Director General with all necessary assistance. “I want to thank you all for your help and support during my time as Director,” he said.
Following the announcements, a group of leaders from Azimio and other political parties urged the President to intervene in the changes, citing the administration’s lack of diversity in appointments.
“It’s official that we no longer have a country called Kenya,” said Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina.
