Scrap dealers strip SGR Railway in Kajiado county during curfew hours

Kenya Railways have cautioned the rise in cases of vandalism on parts of the Nairobi-Mombasa standard gauge railway (SGR) line guardrail in Kajiado county – By Gerald Gekara

This is after a decrease in activity along the highly valueble Nairobi-Mombasa SGR line, and redeployment of Police officers manning the railway infrastructure.

Except for cargo freights, April’s order by President Uhuru Kenyatta halted services to curb new coronavirus infections, and the subsequent lockdown on movement between Nairobi and Mombasa counties, scrap dealers have moved to dismantle the railway parts for sale.

“KR has fallen victim to vandalism activities where thieves even removed some metallic pipes installed at the SGR Bridge that crosses Magadi Road on the way to Kiserian sub-county just past Maxwell University at DK24 to DK26,” Kenya Railways MD,Philip Mainga said.

The order halted the lucrative SGR route between Kenya’s two vibrant cities that last year earned Kenya Railways a whooping Sh3.2 billion.
