Six people have been arrested for heckling and throwing stones at Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition party running mate, Martha Karua, during her tour of Kirinyaga County last week.
Kirinyaga Central Deputy County Commissioner Daniel Ndege said the six were suspected of being part of a group that engaged in hooliganism and tried to disrupt Ms. Karua’s political rally.
The six are said to have stoned Karua’s convoy in Kagumo, Kerugoya and Kutus.
“There were some youths that decided to engage in uncalled for behavior in Kagumo, Kerugoya and Kutus. As we are talking, there are six boys who have been arrested and arraigned in court for disrupting peace and causing hooliganism,” he said.
Ndege urged residents and parents to guide their children against causing violence in political rallies or being used by politicians to disrupt meetings.
“The government is on the lookout. Anyone engaged in hooliganism will be arrested and charged in a court of law. Parents should advise their children to keep out of trouble,” said Mr. Ndege.
At the same time, he singled out a group of politicians who have a habit of giving money to young people in order for them to cause chaos at opponents’ rallies.
Ndege also stated that pulling down campaign posters is also a crime and warned of impending arrests over the same.
The arrest of the six comes barely a week after Interior PS Karanja Kibicho issued a stern warning to those disrupting meetings of persons they do not support in the August 9 polls and asked the police to crack the whip on political rallies’ hecklers.
