Sonko Reprieve As Supreme Court Stops Swearing-in

The Supreme Court has halted the swearing-in of acting Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu for 2 weeks.

This is after a successful application by ex-governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko’s urgent application and affidavit were received by Justice Ibrahim Mohammed, who issued a conservatory order lasting 14 days.

"I hereby grant prayers 1 and 2 of the Motion for a limited period of 14 days pending inter partes hearing of the said motion and in terms of Section 24 of the Supreme Court Act, 2017," Justice Ibrahim read.

Sonko’s appeal to overturn Kananu’s inauguration as governor was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on October 22. This paved way for the swearing in of the deputy governor.

Nairobi County’s next deputy governor, Anne Kananu Mwenda, was named, filling a seat that had been vacant for three years.

Ms. Mwenda was sworn in, officially beginning the process that would lead to her appointment to the Governor’s Office to replace Mike Sonko, who was impeached.

For the previous two years, she was the Nairobi County Chief Officer for Disaster Management and Coordination.
