Speaker Muturi Urges Calm As MPs Plot To Disrupt Budget Reading

MPs have threatened to interrupt the budget reading on Thursday afternoon if the National Government Constituency Development Fund-CDF is not disbursed on time.

The parliamentarians claim the National Treasury has failed to deliver on its earlier promise to provide the funds to constituencies before the end of the fiscal year this month.

Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, on the other hand, urged legislators to follow the law.

The National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee has started the budget reading process for this year.

Kanini Kega, the chair of the committee, urged MPs to embrace the report as he requested approval for a Ksh1.95 trillion loan from the consolidated fund.

National Treasury CS Ukur Yatani announced in March that at least Ksh. 2 billion will be released every week until the conclusion of the fiscal year 2020/2021.

The vow, according to the MPs, has not been fulfilled.

The lawmakers were locked in a battle with the Treasury Department in early March, threatening to overturn government-sponsored motions if the Treasury Department failed to disburse the funds.
