Tanzania To Start Producing COVID-19 Vaccines

Tanzania is planning to build its own COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing facilities to help in the country’s efforts to combat the illness.

As the government strives to become a major exporter of vaccines in East and Southern Africa, President Samia Suluhu has requested the European Union to consider supporting the scheme.

She predicted that Tanzania would spend about TZS.216 billion (Ksh.10.6 billion) on vaccine imports by 2030, emphasizing the need of establishing the manufacturing plant.

“Tanzania wishes to submit a proposal on the same, and I am looking forward to facilitation of this idea into a fruitful project. I trust this plan, when implemented, will open new avenues to deepen our ties,” President Samia told the European Council president Charles Michel during a visit to Belgium.

The strategy contrasts with Tanzania’s previous administration, which was led by John Magufuli, a notable coronavirus skeptic who died of heart issues last year.

Tanzania has received development assistance from the EU worth more than 2.3 billion euros ($2.6 billion) since 1975.
