Uhuru Gazettes Martha Koome As Chief Justice

President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially named Lady Justice Martha Koome as Kenya’s new Chief Justice.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 166 (1) (ii) of the Constitution of Kenya, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces appoint Martha Karambu Koome to be the Chief Justice of Kenya,” the notice read.

The move comes barely two hours after the National Assembly overwhelmingly supported Lady Justice Martha Koome’s candidacy.

On April 28, President Kenyatta presented her name to Parliament for approval after defeating nine other nominees, including judges, famous private practice lawyers, and law professors.

Ms Koome was approved by Parliament on Wednesday morning, opening the route for her inauguration.

Ms Koome, who is 61 years old, has the option of retiring when she reaches the age of 65.
