Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta has reaffirmed his commitment to handing over power peacefully to President-elect William Ruto, whose election was upheld by the Supreme Court.
Speaking during an Azimio parliamentary group at the Maasai Lodge on Wednesday, September 7, Uhuru said he will do so because it is a constitutional duty.
However, he maintained that this did not imply that he supported Ruto, stating that his preferred candidate has always been Raila Odinga, the Azimio flagbearer.
“I will hand over power smiling because it’s my Constitutional duty but my leader is Baba, Raila Odinga. Politics is not a matter to keep in your pockets,” he stated.
At the same time, the outgoing president said Kenyans denied themselves a chance to foster unity in the country by failing to vote in the Azimio leader for the top seat.
“You denied yourself an opportunity to bring the country together, You haven’t denied Raila. Msiwekwe Kwa mfuko,” he said.
President Kenyatta weighed in on the upcoming National Assembly and Senate elections for speakers, endorsing Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in the Senate race.
The former Vice President, according to Uhuru, was better placed to keep Ruto’s cabinet in check.
This is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s first meeting with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance parliamentary group since the August 9 elections.
