US Offers Ksh. 570M Reward For Al-Shabaab Operative

The US government has offered a Ksh.570 million ($5 million) reward for information on a wanted terror mastermind linked to Al-Shabaab, a Somali-based Islamic terrorist group. 

Jehad Serwan Mostafa, alias Ahmed Gurey, is a U.S. citizen and a prominent leader of the terrorist organization, according to a notification issued by the US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program on Sunday. 

The notification stated, “He leads AS activities, trains recruits, and directs terrorist strikes in Somalia and East Africa.” 

Mostafa is also on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list, under the names Anwar al-Amriki and Emir Anwa.

Before relocating to Somalia in 2005, the 41-year-old attended college in San Diego, California.

Mostafa is said to be a senior figure in the terror group, with responsibilities that include “serving as a military instructor at the group’s training camps, leading foreign fighters, operating in the group’s media wing, acting as an intermediary between al-Shabaab and other terrorist organizations, and overseeing the group’s use of explosives in terrorist attacks.” 

He was also related to operations against the Somali government and internationally funded African Union forces in Somalia and East Africa, according to the US authorities. 

In 2009, he was charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.
