US Secretary Blinken Lauds Uhuru’s Peace Efforts

He urged peace and patience as the IEBC's presidential vote tallying continues.

President Uhuru Kenyatta received praise from US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Saturday for his continued efforts to advance security and peace in Kenya and the surrounding area.

Blinken and Uhuru discussed his recent first visit to South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda, as well as the significance of Kenya’s elections as a model for Africa.

He urged peace and patience as the IEBC’s presidential vote tallying continues.

“Discussed with President Uhuru Kenyatta the importance of Kenya’s elections as a model for the continent. We encourage peace and patience as the vote tallying continues from the August 9 elections,” Blinken said on his verified Twitter account on Saturday.

During his tour of South Africa, the Secretary of State stated that all eyes would be on Kenya’s elections, expressing hope that they would be peaceful, free, and fair.

The head of state has been leading efforts to bring peace in countries affected by conflict in the continent and most recently convened a meeting with East African Community heads of state as the conflict escalated in Eastern Congo, with accusations and counter-accusations between Congo and Rwanda.
