WHO Declares Road Safety A Global Health Priority

With 1.3 million people dying each year as a result of traffic accidents, the World Health Organization proclaimed road safety a global priority.

Road accidents can be avoided and lives saved if various transportation sector participants and the police work together.

Following the official inauguration of the training today, the National Police Service will go through a training program on how to operate a road crash database system.

The database will be operational soon, thanks to a collaboration between KeNHA and NTSA.

This system will aggregate various data points on road accidents which will assist in making informed decisions for enhancing road safety.

The Safe System approach: accommodating human error

The Safe System approach to road safety aims to ensure a safe transport system for all road users.

Such an approach takes into account people’s vulnerability to serious injuries in road traffic crashes and recognizes that the system should be designed to be forgiving of human error.

The cornerstones of this approach are safe roads and roadsides, safe speeds, safe vehicles, and safe road users, all of which must be addressed in order to eliminate fatal crashes and reduce serious injuries.
