Paul Mutunga Mutungi is a veteran city father.
Mutungi was elected Mbotela councillor in 1997 on Charity Ngilu SDP ticket.
He forged working ties with Dickson Mwangi Wathika, then the Mayor of the City Council of Nairobi.
Over time, they became business associates and was made the Chair of the powerful Water Committee at City Hall.
Mutungi aligned himself with powerful City power brokers such as then Starehe MP Maina Kamanda, then Makadara MP Paul Mugeke, Kamukunji MP Norman Nyagah.
Mutunga was a spanner boy of Rachel Shebesh Father John Mbugua, then a Mayor.
He has evolved at every election cycle since and is an influence peddler per excellence in Nairobi.
He has exploited the huge Kamba presence in Nairobi and angles to represent their interests.
Kamba votes are an important segment in the Nairobi metropolis. The community is the third numerically strong demographic in the city.
Before joining politics, Mutunga was mentored by a brother of Johnstone Muthama, the owner of Kyaume stores in Mbotela Shopping Centre.
Mutunga is a hard core Eastlands Street operator. Born, bred and socialised in Mbotela.
Todate he is a household name in Mbotela, a celeb of sorts.
His nomination is supposed to appease the spirits of the Akamba Community in Nairobi after their son Gideon Sonko Mbuvi Kivanguli was ejected from the Governship of Nairobi. Or so those who orchestrated Sonko removal and installed Mutungi think.
The hand and political scent of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka is in the air.
