Hon. Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has declared her intention to step into national politics, signaling the continuation of her family’s storied political legacy.
Speaking during her father’s state funeral in Bondo, Siaya County, Winnie said she is ready to return home and serve the people of Kenya. The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP, who was nominated by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in 2022, made her announcement before President William Ruto and other dignitaries.
“Your Excellency, our people appreciate you for honouring our father. Thank you for standing with us,” she said.
“You should also know that, in case you are wondering, I am ready to come back home. For all the leaders we visited around the world, I will return personally to say thank you.”
Her remarks drew cheers from mourners and political leaders alike, with many interpreting them as a clear signal of her intention to carry forward the Odinga legacy.
She has been particularly very visible in the streets as Raila Odinga was being teargassed during the Azimio Anti-government protests.
