Workers Vow To Strike Over SRC Decision To Suspend Payhike

The Salary Renumeration Commission has been condemned over a decision to suspend salary increments over tough COVID-19 times.

Central Organization for Trade Unions (COTU) said the move was illegal.

The workers’ union gave the SRC two weeks to revoke the order or face a statewide strike.

“Failure to which, the entire work force within the public service will proceed on a national 14 day strike without reference to the government.” the statement read.

Teachers who have been impacted by the decision have also spoken out.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) stated in a statement that while the SRC announcement was disappointing, it would not deter the union from pressing for a salary increase.

The KUPPET Secretary General, Akello Misori, also stated that the union had begun the process of re-engaging the Teachers Service Commission ahead of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement’s expiration.

He accused the SRC of ostensibly blocking any compensation reviews, despite the fact that some civil service cadres had received salary and allowance increases in the current fiscal year.

The National Executive Meeting of KUPPET is slated for next week, and it is expected to publish a detailed statement on the matter.
