Toure ‘Breaks’ City Champions League Curse

Toure, who has played under Guardiola for both Barcelona and Guardiola, was in Istanbul, Turkey, for the draw on Thursday night.

Manchester City fans believe Yaya Toure has broken the club’s “Champions League curse.”

The Champions League is the only trophy the Sky Blues have yet to win since joining the competition in 2011.

City was assigned to Group G, which included Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, and Copenhagen.

Beforehand, City legend Toure wished his former employers “good luck,” and many fans believe this means the so-called curse has been lifted.

Despite dominating domestically over the last decade, City has had a number of close calls in Europe.

City was eliminated from the competition after a dramatic defeat in the second leg of their semi-final at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid has eliminated Pep Guardiola’s team in the semi-finals twice, most recently in extra time last season after a dramatic second-leg comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu.

City came close in 2021, but were defeated 1-0 in Porto by Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. In addition, there have been disappointing knockout stage losses to Monaco and Lyon in 2017 and 2020, respectively.

Guardiola’s struggle for success in Europe over the last decade has been attributed to a variety of factors and explanations.

But City will be hoping that the £51 million signing of Erling Haaland makes a difference in the big moments.
