Kingi Political Bus Stalks Mijikenda Votes

The Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) political party, a brainchild of Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has now been fully registered by the government.

With it receiving its fully registered certificate from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), PAA now joins the list of Coast-based political parties that will be on the frontline to fight for votes with other political parties.

PAA received its certificate on Monday from the registrar of political parties hence, ending speculations rife that the party would be locked out of the next Year’s General Election after failing to meet the October 18 deadline.

Kilifi Governor formed the political outfit after abandoning the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and what appeared to be a fallout between the Kilifi County boss and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

In March this year, Governor Kingi told Mr. Odinga in Ganze that time was up for him to lead a new coast political party so that they would be in coalition with other parties and that Coast would not again be just a spectator in Kenyan politics.

“Time has come for Coast to also sit at the negotiating table. We have been watching other regions do it and the benefits are immense. Now we can’t wait anymore. We have to have our own political party.” the Governor told Raila.

Although that did not go down well with Mr. Odinga, Governor Kingi went ahead and formed PAA after several efforts to unite the other Coast-based political parties failed.

The Governor was later to be ousted as the Kilifi ODM chairman and his post taken over by Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire.

Other Coast parties expected to battle for the coast votes include Kadu Asili, Umoja Summit Party of Kenya (USPK), Shirikisho Party of Kenya, Devolution Party of Kenya and the Republican Council (RC).

According to PAA youth league leader Samir Nyundo, officials have done their party which has resulted in getting the certificate but the big task ahead is for Kilifi people to support it.

“We have done our party and the rest remains for the people of Kilifi to support their own political party. I am expecting even ASAL CAS Gideon Mung’aro and other senior Kilifi leaders to come on board and sensitize our people about the importance of this party in the development of the region,” Mr Nyundo said.

PAA is expected to further complicate matters for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM in terms of vote hunt. ODM has for several years been a dominant party in Coast politics but its dominance has been waning of late.

Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, Paul Katana(Kaloleni) and Aisha Jumwa have been trying to sell UDA to the Kilifi masses, while Mr Mwambire and Gideon Mung’aro and Senator Stewart Madzayo are in the frontline selling ODM agenda to the Kilifi people.
