Raila Calls Interpol To Investigate Lawyer Paul Gicheru’s Death

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has demanded that Interpol investigate the death of lawyer Paul Gicheru in order to avoid what he calls a cover-up.

In a statement by Raila’s spokesperson Prof Makau Mutua on Wednesday, Raila claims Gicheru died suddenly under mysterious circumstances while awaiting judgment at the ICC for his alleged involvement in witness interference in Kenya’s post-election cases in 2007/08.

“This pattern of mysterious and unexplained deaths, some of them gruesome and macabre is extremely disturbing. To avoid a cover-up in Kenya, we call upon international investigative agencies, including Interpol to lead the investigation,” Raila said.

Gicheru was found dead in his Karen home on Monday evening.

He was found unresponsive around 7 p.m., according to police. The officers stated that the cause of his death was unknown.

“He had late lunch and felt unwell and went to bed but he did not wake up,” police said.

“His son too collapsed and was taken to Karen hospital in stable condition,” police added.

Raila stated that the investigation into Gicheru’s puzzling death is sensitive due to the international implications of the charges he faced at the International Criminal Court.

“Kenya is a party to the ICC statute and should fully cooperate with the investigation,” Raila said.

He expressed his condolences to the late lawyer’s family and friends, saying that a thorough and credible investigation would reveal the circumstances surrounding his death.
