Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly urging sporting director Andrea Berta to secure the signing of Athletic Bilbao star Oihan Sancet this summer, as the club looks to bolster its midfield ahead of a pivotal new season.
The Gunners have enjoyed a strong run of form, including a dominant 4-0 win over Ipswich Town and a historic Champions League quarter-final triumph against Real Madrid. But with veterans Thomas Partey and Jorginho both out of contract at the end of the season, plans are already in motion for midfield reinforcements.
According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Arteta has become increasingly fixated on 24-year-old Sancet, who has scored 15 goals in just 17 La Liga starts this campaign. The Spain international’s powerful, intelligent play has caught the eye of several European clubs, but Arsenal are said to be making him a top priority.
Sancet, a product of Bilbao’s famed academy, has a reported release clause of around €80 million. While Athletic are notoriously firm on their valuations, optimism remains in North London that Premier League football could tempt the midfielder into a new challenge.
Arteta, who is also targeting Sancet’s teammate Nico Williams, appears keen on a double swoop from Bilbao as Arsenal aim to strengthen both wings and midfield. Williams’ release clause is believed to be €58 million.
A move for Sancet would not only offer depth but also provide a potential long-term complement or alternative to club captain Martin Ødegaard. With a Champions League semi-final against PSG approaching, Arsenal’s ambitions off the pitch look as strong as those on it.
