Clinical workers end strike after meeting with CS Mutahi Kagwe

Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has urged its members to report to work, ending a month-long strike that paralyzed public health – By Gerald Gekara.

KUCO Chairperson Peterson Wachira thanked Health CS Mutahi Kagwe for ensuring that workers are able to administer care in a safe environment.

“What we have started is not an end, it is a journey. We will go hand in hand and review the process to attain Universal Health Care (UHC),” Wachira said.

On his part, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the government is committed to ensuring continuity of services.

“We have a new present for Kenyans. We have been working to arrive at a decision with clinical officers. Let us not lose sight of the need to serve our people,” the CS said.

KUCO Secretary-General George Gibore said the government committed to addressing the issues, and instructed workers to avail themselves at hospitals immediately.

“The strike is called off immediately.. Members to resume duty within the next 24 hours. We will continue with meetings with CS. Members let us offer services, our issues will be addressed,” said George Gibore.

He added that clinical officers have been assured that they will get medical cover and group life insurance.

“We have agreed on how to finalize the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and register it in court by February. The CS has committed to undertake it,” Gibore added.
