“In simple English, Dr. Nancy Macharia OF TSC has said teachers to report to school, by Monday. They are coming to prepare schools for a possible reopening at a whatever time.” CS George Magoha said.
Speaking during a press briefing Monday at KICD, Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia assured the country that teachers are ready to support children recover the lost time and save the academic year that was at risk of being lost.
“We ask teachers to report back to school on Monday, 28th September to prepare for the eventual opening of schools. Our teachers are prepared and ready to support children recover the lost time & save the academic year that was at risk of being lost,” said Macharia.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha also assured the country that the process of supplying the Ksh1.9B desks to schools will be transparent.
“The President said we should be given Ksh. 1.9B for desks and chairs. No law stops us from ensuring Juakali people have the capacity to deliver and the contract will not go-to contractors. Desks shall go to sub-counties. Unregistered schools will not get desks,” said CS Magoha.
He further noted that all final year science-based students at universities allowed to report to universities to complete their courses.
But parents say they are not ready for school reopening. Speaking to the press on Sunday, September 20, Kenya Parents Association Chairman Nicholas Maiyo urged the government to review fee guidelines arguing that parents had depleted their savings.
“Most parents lost their jobs in March and May, and may not be able to raise the second term fees. The government should review the fees guidelines. We are in very difficult times,” Maiyo told Daily Nation.
Several parents also feared that fee charges would be increased in public and private schools as parents would be required to add facemasks as well as hand sanitizers to their children’s budget.
The government, which vowed to distribute two masks per learner, pegged the charges per mask at Ksh35, money parents would be expected to pay.
