How Robbers Disguised as Police Rob Victims Withdrawing Huge Sums of Money

A team of detectives from the DCI headquarters’ Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Action Team (OAT) has arrested three suspects linked to a string of robberies in Nairobi and its environs.

According to a statement by the DCI, on January 23, 2026, a Chinese national was robbed along Kyang’ombe on Old Mombasa Road after being flagged down by a dark grey car, registration number KDT 317F, carrying men disguised as traffic police officers.

The suspects demanded her driving licence before commandeering her vehicle and escaping with Sh2.14 million she had withdrawn from DTB Bank Mombasa Road and Standard Chartered Bank Sameer branches.

In a separate incident on March 17, a man who had withdrawn Sh4.2 million from Equity Bank Utawala was intercepted near Gateway Mall by four suspects posing as police officers.

Armed with pistols, they handcuffed and forced him into their vehicle before robbing him and later dumping him in Karen.

Another victim lost Sh1.4 million near Cabanas Interchange after being ambushed by suspects in a grey Mazda CX-5 posing as police officers.

Following investigations, detectives arrested Boniface Kilonzo Mwaniki, Josphat Musili, and Muia Mutune in separate locations.

Authorities recovered a Mazda CX-5 (KDW 016H), reflector jackets, and a military jungle hat. Police believe the suspects are part of a larger syndicate that changes number plates to evade arrest.

The suspects remain in custody awaiting arraignment as investigations continue.
