Garissa: Armed Men Open Fire on Matatu Full of Passengers

Security concerns along the Northern corridor remain an issue amid the Government’s move to deploy police officers in Haiti.

This comes as a matatu transporting people from Garissa to Hulugho was attacked on Monday by armed men who intended to loot them of their possessions.

According to a police report filed under O/B number 32/09/10/2023, the incident occurred when a group of three males stopped a Toyota Probox on the side of the Garissa-Hulugho road at Bukuree Dam and signaled the PSV driver to stop.

The driver, on the other hand, refused to halt and instead raced at a fast speed past the armed robbers.

In return, the armed men shot at the vehicle, causing panic among the passengers.

One of the bullets struck the matatu’s back wheel, causing the driver to stop the vehicle.

According to the police report, the cartridge was kept as an exhibit to assist in further investigation while the Probox was taken to Garissa Police Station.

The incident comes in the wake of the escalating number of attacks along the North region, with counties such as Wajir, Mandera and Garissa bearing the brunt of the attacks.

To curb these attacks, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said that the government would work round the clock in the Northern and Coastal regions to restore order.
