Garissa Budgets Ksh 100 Million to Mitigate Drought

The Garissa County Government has set aside Sh100 million to assist people who have been affected by the region’s continuing drought.

During an emergency drought response and resource mobilization meeting in Garissa, Finance and Economic Planning CEC Issa Oyow told representatives from the county and national governments, as well as non-state donor partners, that the funds were set up in response to the humanitarian crisis that resulted in severe food and water shortages caused by prolonged drought.

To solve the gnawing dilemma, Oyow said a coalition of partners would need to release at least Sh 300 million.

He stated the county government was initially involved in numerous mitigation initiatives such as drilling boreholes, building water pans, assisting crop farmers, mass animal immunization, and disease surveillance, all of which contributed to mitigating the present drought’s impact.

“To minimize duplication of services and inefficiency, we advise emergency response teams to discuss their plan of action, budget, and operational regions with the donor coordination department,” says the statement. Oyow remarked

He praised the work of donor partners who have been involved in the water, agriculture, health, and livestock sectors in order to successfully respond to drought intervention.
