Gikomba Fire — Millions Destroyed in Suspected Arson

Several traders stationed at the Gikomba Market in Nairobi are counting losses after an early morning fire razed down their properties.

The fire is thought to have started at around 2 am on 6th August 2021 spreading fast into the multiple stalls.

Several businesses structures including Mitumba stores were destroyed by the inferno.

“It’s so devastating for Kenyans who have invested millions in Gikomba market in Nairobi to keep on losing their livelihoods through rampant fires. Evidence is proving that it is accidental.

Why always Gikomba. The authorities should come to the bottom line of the matter once and for all.” Millicent Omanga wrote on Facebook.

So far no casualties have been reported but properties whose value could not immediately be established were lost.

Several fire incidents at the popular markets have caused severe damage over the years, sometimes leading to fatalities and injuries.

Last year in June 2020 another fire was reported at the market. Property of unknown value was also destroyed.
