Google has announced the opening of its first product development center in Africa, in Nairobi, to create “transformative” products and services for the African market and the rest of the world.
Over the next two years, Google plans to hire over 100 tech talent, including software engineers, researchers, and designers, to help solve difficult and technical challenges.
Top of its list includes improving the smartphone experience for Africans or constructing a more reliable internet infrastructure, said Suzanne Frey, Google’s vice president of products.
This follows the tech giant’s announcement in October of last year that it would invest $1 billion over the next five years.
After opening an AI and research center in Ghana in 2019, the center is Google’s second major research and development investment in Africa.
Google is the latest company to open an innovation hub in Nairobi, joining a growing list of tech behemoths.
Visa announced the opening of its first innovation center to co-create payment and commerce solutions with partners two weeks ago, shortly after Microsoft opened a research and development center in Nairobi.
