The government has issued a gazette notice informing the public of its intention to purchase parcels of land for the construction of the Likoni floating Bridge project in Mombasa. The notice by the National Land Commission (NLC) indicates a plan to acquire approximately 1.3ha of land owned by Simba Colt Motors and Koifan Developers Limited.
“The National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) gives notice that the government intends to acquire the following parcels of land for the construction of Likoni Floating Footbridge project.” The notice reads
The parcels of land are registered as follows; Mombasa/BlockXL VII/67 owned by Simba Colt Motors Limited, Mombasa/MS/Block 1/1815, and Mombasa/MS/Block 1/1816 both owned by Koifan Developers Limited.
The project worth Ksh1.7billion is meant to ease congestion at the Likoni Ferry channel used by over 300,000 people and 6,000 vehicles daily. The Bridge will stretch from North to South Likoni(660 meters) and will address the congestion problem faced by the residents of Likoni in accessing Mombasa Island as well as achieving social distancing rule in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Despite commendable efforts by County Coordination Units and Security Personnel and the Kenya Ferry Services to streamline services, overcrowding at the ferry has been witnessed, with queues exceeding one kilometer at peak hours. This has raised concerns of humanitarian situation particularly with the recent outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic,” KeNHA said in a previous statement.
The construction being undertaken by the China Road and Bridge Construction (CRBC) which to complete it within the next 6 months.
