Bandits Attack Matatu, Shoot Passengers

Eight passengers and their driver were rushed to hospital after their Matatu was attacked by armed gunmen who sprayed it with bullets at Kainuk, Turkana South on the Kapenguria-Lodwar Road.

According to the police, four of the victims have been seriously injured.

The 14-seater Matatu was traveling from Kitale to Lodwar when it was ambushed a few minutes afternoon.

According to Turkana South Sub-County police commander Robert Kibuchi, the gunmen robbed the passengers of their belongings, including cash and mobile phones, before fleeing into nearby bushes.

“They (attackers) emerged from the bushes and signaled the matatu to stop. They, thereafter, shot the driver in the chest. The gunmen then embarked on haphazardly shooting at the matatu and its occupants,” he told the media.

According to the victims, the vehicle was approaching the Kenya Wildlife Service camp near Kainuk trading center on the border of Turkana and West Pokot when the seven gunmen ambushed them.

Four of the victims are currently receiving treatment at the Kapenguria county referral hospital in West Pokot, while the remaining five were taken to the Kainuk dispensary and are responding well to treatment.

‘’The four, who are in critical condition, are three passengers and the driver of the matatu. Two of the passengers had been shot in the head, while the driver had been shot in the chest,” he noted.

A manhunt for the suspect is currently underway.
