Mijikenda Kaya elders want all Coast governors and other politicians to embrace the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), a political group affiliated with Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, which was launched only a few weeks ago.
According to the elders, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kwale colleague Salim Mvurya, both from large counties, have been at the forefront of advocating for the region’s own development party.
They also urged Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja, Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana, and Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha to join the new political party, saying it was past time for the region to have its own political force to pursue its agenda.
The elders spoke during this year’s annual Chenda Chenda festival held at the Magarini cultural center. The event was attended by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, Former Kenya Defence Forces Chief of General staff Samson Mwathethe, former Malindi Lucas Maitha among others.
During the ceremony, Kaya elders from the entire Coast region converged at the center dressed in full traditional regalia and top in the agenda was the Coast-based political outfit and unity of the region.

Governor Kingi and Mwathethe addressed the elders in the local Giriama dialect and emphasized the need for the region to push the agenda of the party so as to have a stake in the national cake.
The Chairman of Mijikenda Kaya Elders Association Mwinyi Mwalimu Mrisho said this year the unity of the coast remains its key agenda and that formation of a Coast party would champion for the development of the region in the future.
“What we want and most importantly the way Amason Kingi has sacrificed to come up with the political party, it’s our passionate appeal for Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Salim Mvurya who is one of the leaders at the Coast together with Taita Taveta, Lamu, and Tanariver leaders to come together and push the unity of the region,” he said.
Mr Mrisho called on the Coastal leaders together with the National government to facilitate them so as to begin a peace campaign all over the region ahead of the 2022 General elections.
The chairman said the peace drive will be done to all residents and include those who live in the region but are from other regions.
“Kenya’s one but there are provinces and counties. I, therefore, urge coastal residents who will hear my voice as the chairman of the Mijikenda Kaya elders association to ensure peace prevails,” he said.

Mijikenda Kaya Elders Association Coordinator Tsuma Nzai Kombe said as elders they are in full support of the idea of a political party for the region.
Mr Nzai said they want all elected political leaders to join the party and support the quest for the Coast-based party or else they will not see the light of the day in the 2022 General elections.
“We want them to strategize so that in the near future they tell us the way to go, we want all leaders of Coast to come together, if you are an MP and will not listen to this then you stand to lose,” he said.
Former Malindi MP Lucas Maitha who was present said if other regions are strategizing the coast region must do the same by coming up with their own political outfit.
He wondered why whenever the region comes up with a political party it is seen as a tribal outfit yet other regions are doing the same.
“We are not against anyone they are our friends but this time we will meet there,” said Maitha.
The former legislator said Governor Kingi should lead in the regional parties’ plan and assured him of full support to ensure the region is united and votes as a block.
he said they are tired of being used by Mr. Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement(ODM).

“Baba (Odinga) has never given birth to the coastal people who he has been taking advantage of for years to fulfill his political agenda,” said Mr Maitha.
Initially Governor Kingi had hinted to the Coast residents of an idea of forming ‘Tufe’ a national political party with roots from the Coast region.
Just as he was about to complete the registration process he was removed as ODM chairman in Kilifi county and replaced with Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire.
Currently, PAA has opened over 30 offices countrywide and is going on with mass registration of members.
