3,004 young people from across Makueni County have been recruited to the Kazi Mtaani National Hygiene Program (NHP) – MCGP.
The county programme was officially launched at Unoa grounds Wote by County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed and Governor Kivutha Kibwana on Monday.
Maalim said the youth classified in 30 clusters will engage in activities geared towards improving the environment within informal settlements and urban centres for the next six and half months.
The initiative is meant to cushion the youth from the economic strain caused by the coronavirus pandemic. By end of the six and half months, the beneficiaries will have pocketed a total of Sh 94 million in wages.
Governor Kibwana said his administration has also tailored a youth empowerment programme, where fresh college and university graduates are attached to every county project as apprentices.
The overaching goal of the programme is to build a critical mass of skills for easy employability and entrepreneurial motivation, he said.
