Kenya Pulls Out Of ICJ Ahead Of Somalia Verdict

Kenya has withdrawn its obligatory jurisdiction from the International Court of Justice and will not recognize the judgment in the current Maritime dispute against Somalia.

On Friday, Foreign Affairs PS Macharia Kamau informed reporters that the Kenyan government will not acknowledge the judgment and will not follow its findings, which are due to be released by the court on Tuesday next week.

Kenya and Somalia have been involved in a long-running legal battle at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over a piece of land off Kenya’s coast.

Kamau claims that the court lacks jurisdiction to decide the case.

According to Kamau, the government feels the disagreement should have been settled through peaceful means.

He claimed that the lawsuit was an attempt by Somalia to violate the country’s territorial integrity, which began in 1969.

He was accompanied by Vice Chief of Defence Forces Ogola, Solicitor General Kennedy Ogeto, and Defense PS Ibrahim Mohamed.

The verdict is anticipated to bring an end to the seven-year maritime case that Somalia filed with the International Court of Justice in 2014.
