Two Boda Boda Riders Charged With Robbery

Two boda boda riders accused of being members of a group harassing city residents on Christmas Eve have been charged with robbery.

Both John Kyalo Makau alias Johnte and Thomas Malusi Kilonzo alias Bosco, both 18 years old, was arraigned before Hon Esther Kimilu and denied the accusations in detail.

The two were charged that on December 24, 2022 at Muchai Drive Road, violently robbed Rahab Muthoni her mobile phone valued at Ksh 7,000.

The decision to charge them was arrived at after viewing CCTV footage retrieved from the scene of the crime along Muchai Drive near Bently Club within Kilimani, Nairobi County.

The suspects had been detained at the Kilimani Police Station for 10 days where they were interrogated on the events of December 24, 2022, which left Police Constable Ken Kavunga Wali dead.

The prison warden aged 28 was lynched by an angry mob on Christmas Eve after they allegedly accosted a woman along Muchai Drive in Kilimani, robbing her of her mobile phone and other assorted items.

The DCI identified him as Constable Ken Kavunga Wali and revealed that he is attached to the Nairobi West Prison.

State prosecutor Anne Munyua said, “Police have finalized their investigations although they are still pursuing other members of the notorious gang,”

Ms. Munyua urged that a miscellaneous application which police had filed last December seeking a 10-days detention of the suspects be closed.

“Police are through with investigations and now the two may be charged while police pursue other members of the gang that has been terrorizing members of the public within Kilimani area,” Ms. Munyua stated.

Ms Munyua said a pistol recovered from the deceased officer has been taken for ballistic examination to establish whether it may have been used to commit other crimes.

The two riders who allegedly sped off leaving the deceased officer at the mercy of the angry mob denied the charge then applied to be freed on bond.

Ms Munyua did not oppose the bail application advanced by the accused through their defence lawyer.

The two were however ordered to deposit a bond of Sh500,000 to secure their freedom. The case will proceed on January 18.
