The Law Society of Kenya has issued a statement calling for swift investigations into the disappearance of lawyer Wilson Hassan Nandwa and his client.
It is reported that Professor Wilson Nandwa and his client went missing on Thursday 28th October, 2021 under mysterious circumstances.
"On the said date, Professor Wilson Nandwa visited the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) located at Hospital Road in Nairobi, to represent his client one Mr. Elgiva Bwire who had been released from Kamiti Maximum Security Prisons."
"It is further reported that Professor Nandwa’s Client Mr. Elvis Bwire was released and in the company of his mother, the three left the ATPU at around 11 am. At around 3 pm, Professor Nandwa spoke to a family member and confirmed that he was alright. That was the last communication he has had with his family members and since then he cannot be reached on his mobile phone and his whereabouts remain unknown to date."
The LSK added that Hassan was seen at 4.30 pm on the same day, at the Central Police Station where he reported that his client Mr. Elgiva Bwire had been kidnapped.
However, on 29th October 2021 at 9.37 am, a report of the disappearance of Professor Nandwa was made at Kilimani and Central Police Stations.
"The Police is yet to provide information on the status of any ongoing investigations if any, or on the whereabouts of Professor and his client, more than three days since their mysterious disappearances."
LSK added that the rise in forced disappearances of advocates as well as heinous and brutal murders of members of the public is a deprivation of human rights and must be probed.
"We, therefore, demand his immediate release together with his client Mr. Elgiva Bwire and in any event not later than 24 hours failure to which, the Law Society of Kenya will file applications for habeaus corpus without any further notice." LSK concluded.
