Prison Warden Fined Ksh 970,000 For Aiding Convicts Escape

Zacheus Tirop was found guilty of multiple charges, including aiding convicts escape prison and falsification of judicial documents in violation of Section 351 of the penal code.

A warden has been sent to prison for assisting in the escape of convicts from Maralal GK Prison.

Maralal Senior Principal Magistrate John Tamar ordered that the officer, Zacheus Tirop, pay a Sh970,000 fine or face a three-year prison sentence.

The court found Mr. Tirop guilty of multiple charges, including aiding convicts escape prison and falsification of judicial documents in violation of Section 351 of the penal code.

Mr. Tirop is also accused of soliciting a Sh9,830 bribe from a convict who was then serving a three-month term to fake a court fine receipt.

Tirop was accused with assisting other inmates in escaping from the prison after taking bribes ranging from Sh10,000 to Sh50,000.

In his mitigation, Mr. Tirop told Court he is a father of four children and the breadwinner of his family.

He requested the court for the most lenient punishment possible.

Mr. Tirop informed the court that he frequently incurs medical expenditures for his unwell daughter, who has a chronic ailment.
