Materialism and its effects on Kenyan Youth

The pressure of not being able to afford materialistic things affects young people quite a lot, because there is this pressure put on them to be trendy, own expensive items, dine in posh eateries, drink top tier booze.

When this lifestyle isn’t affordable it leads to self-esteem and bullying even depression to some. – By Stephanie Mwangi.

The society in today’s world is teaching the young people that having materialistic items makes one better than anyone who doesn’t or can’t afford.

Society has them believing that living life in the fast lane is the best life and it’s the only way to live a good life.

FACT: The families that can’t afford these things are actually living a happy life in the long run.

This lifestyle has people going to extreme lengths to have this lavish life but behind the scene of this material life is more often than not misery and debts.

Drown out the pressures of social media and peer pressure because these are the influencing factors towards the pressure of materialism.  For instance, you’ll see someone wear a Louis Vuitton designer bag or shoe and you want the exact same thing so you end up living beyond your means.

But there is one thing that people don’t actually get these designer items have been there will be there so if you really must get these items you have to work to get them without living in debt.

Before one decides to opt for these materialistic things you need to actually think because you view things as possessions and also remember that you aren’t the things you own and also learn to see wealth as a challenge not a result.

A parent-ly you have to care

Parents should also take up the responsibility of guiding their children about the dangers of materialistic life. That it is not a requirement in this life, but instead, teach their kids to nurture their talents, finish their education and be who they want to be without having to worry that his or her friend went to a better school.

For those who are abit well of, they need to teach the essence of giving, not just to please their parents, but only because they feel they need to help those who may not have.

We all need to remember one thing that the things some take for granted, someone else is praying for it.
