The Judiciary has opened a small claims court in Meru county to address backlog and congestion in major courts.
The specialist court will only hear civil cases with a value of less than Ksh. 1 million.
The Small Claims Court is casual, uncomplicated, and not entirely governed by evidentiary standards. Parties can continue based on the papers given to the court without having to make oral arguments.
“Since the establishment of the Small Claims Court 21,000 cases valued at over Ksh 3.7 billion have been heard and determined. This has freed up resources which would otherwise have been tied up in lengthy litigation” said Hon Paul Ndemo, Deputy Chief Registrar of the Judiciary
