Mtwapa Town Gears For New Equipped Modern Market

Mtwapa town in Kilifi county is set to get its first modern market. This is after the county government announced last week that the new market will be opened to traders on Thursday this week. – By Ramadhan Kambi.

According to Trade and Tourism County Executive Nahida Athman, the Mtwapa market is going to be big boost to traders who have been trading their wares on the roadside in Mtwapa town.

“The Mtwapa market is going to provide more trading spaces to traders who have for long been operating without proper structure, most of them traded along the road,” she said.

Speaking to Uzalendo News, Shimo La Tewa MCA Sammy Ndago lauded the county for the opening of the market.

“I am happy that finally this market will be opened to the public. Traders have been having alot of challenges while selling their wares especially during rainy season. But now they can sigh with relief,” Mr Ndago said.

Last week during the Kilifi county Covid-19 Emergency Steering committee meeting, Governor Amason Kingi called for the opening of the market to reduce the number of market traders who have been forced to sell their products in a crowded area hence exposing them to getting infected with Corona.

“Let that market be opened so that we can have a secure working environment for our traders in Mtwapa,” the Governor said during the emergency meeting.

The county is currently undertaking the construction of several markets including the Matsangoni market among others.

Early this year, the renovations of the Oloitiptip market in Kilifi town was completed and traders moved into spacious and modern stalls.

Gongoni marker in Magarini sub county was also opened last July.
