Walkes: Former Spurs Player Dies In A Boat Accident

Former Tottenham youth and Portsmouth defender Anton Walkes has died aged 25 in an accident, his club Charlotte FC said.

Local media reported the Englishman was involved in a boat crash near Miami on Wednesday.

Walkes came through the Tottenham youth teams and played once for the club, in a League Cup tie in 2016.

He also played 66 times for Portsmouth before moving to Atlanta United in the United States in 2020.

Spurs say they will wear black armbands in memory of Walkes during Thursday’s Premier League game with Manchester City.

In a statement, the Premier League club said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Anton Walkes.

“As a mark of respect, our first team will wear black armbands at this evening’s Premier League match against Manchester City, with all our Academy sides to wear black armbands this weekend.”

Charlotte sporting director Zoran Krneta said: “We are heartbroken from the loss of Anton Walkes – a truly incredible father, loving person and outstanding human being.

“Anton embodied what it means to be a part of Charlotte FC and our entire community is grieving over this tragedy. 

“The impact he made in the locker room and throughout Charlotte will never be forgotten. 

“We are thinking of his lovely family during this time and will support them fully in every way imaginable.” 

Portsmouth said: “Everyone at Portsmouth Football Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Anton Walkes.

Messi, Ronaldo Score As PSG Wins Dramatic Saudi Exhibition

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his first game in Saudi Arabia and Lionel Messi was also on the scoresheet as Paris St-Germain edged a Riyadh All-Star XI 5-4 in a thrilling contest.

The exhibition match in the Saudi capital saw two of the greatest players of all time sharing a pitch together for possibly the final time.

Messi opened the scoring and Ronaldo netted twice for 2-2 at half-time. Both players were substituted off just after the hour mark.

The two PSG center-backs were also on the scoresheet as Sergio Ramos added to Marquinhos’ delightful finish in the opening period. 

But the French side played much of the game with 10 men as Juan Bernat received a straight red card for hauling down Saudi international Salem Al Dawsari and Neymar also missed a penalty in a breathtaking first half.

Jang Hyun-soo’s header drew the All-Star XI level at 3-3, but Kylian Mbappe’s penalty and substitute Hugo Ekitike’s composed effort put PSG out of sight.

Anderson Talisca drilled in a long-range consolation late in injury time but there was no time for a dramatic equalizer.

Man City Rises From Defeat To Win 4-2 Against Tottenhan

Manchester City defeated Tottenham at Etihad Stadium, closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points.

Spurs appeared to be doing Arsenal a huge favor when they scored twice in the final moments of the first half, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side facing a third consecutive defeat.

After Rodrigo Bentancur robbed Rodri following Ederson’s poor clearance, Dejan Kulusevski gave Spurs the lead seconds before the break, and Emerson Royal headed a second after the City keeper could only push out Harry Kane’s shot.

Most inside the Etihad Stadium were frustrated but City, inspired by the outstanding Riyad Mahrez, came flying out after the interval to turn the game on its head with three goals in 12 minutes. 

Julian Alvarez scored from close range after Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris could not claim Mahrez’s cross in the 51st minute then Erling Haaland headed in from close range two minutes later to draw City level. 

Spurs almost regained the lead when Ivan Perisic’s shot was deflected onto the woodwork by Rico Lewis before Mahrez completed City’s comeback, winning a challenge before beating Lloris at his near post.

Million French Pour Out To Protest Macron’s Pension Reform

More than a million people took to the streets across France to protest the Macron government’s plans to reform the pension system.

The most contentious of which is a proposal to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. 

Macron insists that the reform is necessary to revive a dormant system, but some government experts say the pension system is in relatively good shape and would likely return to a balanced budget even without reforms. 

According to the interior ministry, 1.2 million people protested across France, with 80,000 of them in Paris. 

However, union organizers estimated the number at 2 million, with 400,000 protesting in Paris.

The Macron administration’s plans to reform the mass protests were also witnessed in cities such as Lyon, Marseilles, Montpellier, Nantes, and on the French island of Corsica. 

Macron, who was in Spain on Thursday, told a press conference that the government was determined to push the reform forward. 

On the sidelines of the protest, members of the anarchist Black Bloc movement threw garbage bins, bottles, and smoke bombs at police, leading to the arrest of more than a dozen people. 

On January 31, unions have called for new strikes and protests.

Take Charge Of Africa Development — Leaders Told

President William Ruto has urged Africa’s leadership to take charge of its development agenda.

He said the Continent’s leadership must find ways of implementing Vision 2063 and fund it as much as possible.

The President explained that for Africa to make the necessary transformational strides, the youth — who have requisite drive, energy and skills — must be fully involved.

“These are Africa’s greatest resource; we must be particular about their education and training,” President Ruto said.

He was speaking on Thursday at State House, Nairobi, when he held talks with the Africa Union Development Agency – New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA- NEPAD) CEO Nardos Bekele-Thomas.

The President expressed Kenya’s support for the Agency.

He said AUDA, under the New Partnership for African Development, should work with other formations for faster implementation of the continent’s Vision 2063.

Ruto Promises Extra Ksh 1 Billion For Affirmative Action Fund

The National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) will be increased by Sh1 billion to Sh3 billion in the next financial year. 

President William Samoei Ruto said the enhancement of the funds will help address the plight of the vulnerable.

He explained that the increment will also provide an avenue for the promotion of enterprises and value addition initiatives.

The President made the remarks on Thursday at State House, Nairobi, when he hosted Woman Representatives drawn from all the 47 counties. 

He challenged the women leaders to be at the centre in promoting local manufacturers while acquiring the sanitary towels. 

“I also urge you to step up and help in the fight against teenage pregnancies and female genital mutilation.”

President Ruto Declares War On Alcohol Abuse

President William Samoei Ruto has said the country must tackle alcoholism. He said many lives were being lost and destroyed as a result of alcohol abuse.

“National and County Governments must work together to confront this [serious] problem.”

He said it is time alcohol is sold to designated areas only.

The President was speaking on Thursday during laying of the foundation stone of the Ruiru Affordable Housing Project, Kings Boma Estate in Kiambu County.

Present were Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, CSs Zachariah Njeru, Moses Kuria, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, MPs Simon Kingara (Ruiru), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri) and Gitonga Mukunji (Manyatta).

Johana Ng’eno (Emurua Dikirr), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), John Njuguna (Kiambaa), Anne Wamuratha (Kiambu), James Wamacukuru (Kabete) and Elijah Kururia (Gatundu North) were also there.

The President insisted that his administration was on course to delivering 200,000 affordable urban housing units annually.

“Construction materials will be sourced locally, so will be labour because we want to engage our youth in gainful employment,” he said.

Mr Gachagua said the Government will keep launching development projects in every part of Kenya. 

“No area will be left behind in our quest to making our country more equal,” he said.

30 Overloaded, Abandoned Trucks To Be Auctioned

More than 30 trucks Impounded by the police and Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) for overloading are set to be auctioned for failure to pay fines.

According to SSP John Gichuhi, the fines range between Sh.400,000 to Sh. 4 million per lorry for various offenses.

The owners of the lorries have failed or neglected to collect them in the last 90 days.

“The law will follow its cause. They have left the lorries at Police yards in weighbridges. We have advised KeNHA to auction them”, he said.

Engineer Kennedy Ndugire said the offenders have been afforded humble time to pay, but they have failed to do so within the legal period.

Eng. Ndugire said the matter has been escalated to other agencies for enforcement action. He urged truck drivers and owners to stop over loading as they risk getting their lorries auctioned.

Overloaded Trucks To Pay Sh.45Million For Lift Axle Offenses

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) will deploy the East African Axle load legislation to tame overloading and lift axle offenses.

Eng. Kennedy Ndugire, Senior Manager of the Axle load enforcement said offenders will be forced to pay the maximum fine of Sh.45 Million for overloading on the Northern Corridor.

The KeNHA boss said the Kenyan and the East African courts have been sensitised on the overloading Act.

“Our trunk roads have costed Kenyans Sh.3 trillion. We now must protect them. If you don’t have Sh.45million to pay as fine, keep off the Northern Corridor” Ndugire said.

He said KeNHA will deploy the Axle Load enforcement Act for class B and S roads, which provides for fines of Sh.4Million per over loader.

He said KeNHA will soon auction lorries whose owners have failed to pay requisite over loading fines.

Drivers of the trucks will also face jail terms of 3 years and above for flouting the rules. He said KeNHA has spend considerable amount of money sensitising Kenyans on dangers of over loading and said the time to enforcement is now.

The Inspector General-NPS, Mr. Japhet Koome hosted the Head of Public Service (HoPS), Mr. Felix Kosgei at National Police Service Headquarters.

HoPS familiarized himself with the NPS organization, assuring the IG and NPS fraternity of President William Ruto’s complete support to guarantee that NPS is autonomous, well-resourced, and safeguarded.

Their conversation also included strengthening police professionalism as directed by the rule of law, national values such as honor, objectivity, and dignity as outlined in Kenya’s Constitution.
