Kirinyaga: 14-Year-Old Boy Dies By Suicide

Graphi: THT

A 14-year-old boy from Kibingoti village in Ndia, Kirinyaga West, who was set to join secondary school after sitting for his KCPE exams in 2022 committed suicide for unknown reasons.

The boy’s father, James Gatithi, stated that he had cleared the boy’s fees and was preparing to send him to school when he learned of his untimely death.

“I stopped what I was doing and rushed back home to verify the news only to find that my son was no more. I had spoken to him a day earlier and he was in good spirits when I told him that I found a school for him,” said Gatithi.

The father stated that he had already paid the admissions fees and was given a receipt, which he gave to the boy.

Eunice Wanyaga, Gatithi’s sister, who joined the family in mourning, described the deceased as hardworking and obedient.

“The deceased and myself kept in constant communication and he never once told me that he was contemplating suicide. So his death came as a surprise to all of us,” said Wanyaga.

The boy’s body has since been moved to a nearby mortuary while his family prepares for his funeral.

The incident mirrors another case, reported in late December 2022 in the same area, where a grade four pupil committed suicide under unclear circumstances.

The high suicide cases in the area have raised concerns among residents and religious leaders alike.

Makau Mutua: We Will Stop At Nothing To Reclaim Our Victory

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga’s campaign secretariat spokesperson, Prof. Makau Mutua, has vowed that the coalition will reclaim their victory which he said was stolen in the August 9 General Elections.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen on Wednesday, Mutua said they will work within the constitutional framework as they fight to reclaim their stolen victory.

According to Mutua, the Azimio camp spent time gathering concrete evidence to back up their allegations against President Ruto.

“We believe that this election was stolen and rigged by UDA, IEBC in cahoots with some international interests and we have evidence of that,” he noted.

He added that the people of Kenya have a right to be angry as their will was subverted during the General Elections.

“If the will of the people is subverted by cartels of individuals working in cahoots with institutions within the state to steal an election and the people are not angry then something is wrong. We will stop at nothing to reclaim our victory.”

Makau also stated that the coalition is depressed because the results of the 2022 general elections surprised them.

According to Mutua, the signs of Azimio’s victory were so clear that even the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was taken aback when they were announced the winners.

” If we are honest even UDA were surprised that they were declared winners as they never expected it. UDA knew and everyone knew that Azimio was going to win,” Mutua said.

This comes on the heels of Raila’s public declaration that the Kenya Kwanza government does not have the mandate to rule and should resign.

He has also urged his supporters to oppose the UDA party’s rule, which he claims they oppose.

President Ruto: Value Addition Will Fetch Agriculture More Cash

President William Ruto has challenged African leaders to take the discourse on agriculture beyond production to value addition and manufacturing.

He said Africa has the potential to produce surplus food and process for export.

The Head of State noted that this will generate more income and create jobs, especially for the youth.

Speaking during the Dakar 2 Summit – Feed Africa in Senegal on Wednesday, President Ruto said these are the initiatives that will transform Africa.

“We should not be discussing about food shortage 60 years after independence.“

In a panel discussion of Heads of State and Governments, President Ruto said the upscaling of agriculture in the continent would require the right input, technology, enhanced irrigation and mechanisation.

“Young people are also critical in the revival of our agriculture. Crucially, the greater the infusion of technology, the better the returns.”

He warned against dependence on rain-fed agriculture saying many countries in Africa experience hunger due to this.

Irrigation, the President explained, will assure Africa of enough food for consumption and export.

“There is no magic to enhanced agricultural production; more fertiliser use translates to more production.”

Senegal President said Macky Sall, the co-convener of the summit, said it was regrettable that Africa had become dependent on food imports despite its great agricultural potential.

He called on African Governments and development partners to work together to reverse the trend.

“African should learn to feed itself and contribute to feeding the rest of the world,” he said. “We need to allocate at least 10 per cent of our budget to agriculture.”

African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina called on African leaders to utilise aridable land to feed the continent and end the existing dependence on food imports.

“What Africa does with agriculture today will determine the future of food security in the world,” he added.

He said AfDB will invest the 10 billion USD in the next five years to support food production in Africa.

Energy Ministry Moves To Restore Degraded Water Catchment Areas

Written By Vanessa Kariuki ||

The Ministry of Energy has vowed to collaborate with Communities to create woodlots and plant trees in the water catchment zones of hydropower dams using the KEEP Fund.

KEEP carries out projects in the Upper Tana Catchment, Nchura and Mweru Hills, Nyeri, Londiani in Kericho, Maragoli Hills, and Trans Nzoia Counties.

In June 2022, community forest association members planted trees in Vihiga County’s Maragoli Hills. These trees have since grown enormously.

The goal of the State Department’s energy initiatives is to support President Ruto’s intention to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

KeNHA Launches Campaign To Sensitize Axle-Load Compliance, Road Safety

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Western Region team held a seven-day public sensitization exercise on road reserve protection and road safety.

The team was led by Deputy Regional Director Eng. Edwin Otieno, Assistant Surveyor Collins Githui and Axle Load Enforcement and Highway Unit (ALEHU) Chief Inspector Moses Nderitu.

The exercise was carried out along Kakamega – Ekoro road, Sigalagala – Kapsabet road, Namgoi – Nandi Hills road, and Chebarbar – Lessos – Nabkoi road.

This comes after truck drivers plying the National and regional highways were put on notice for illegally tampering with liftable axles.

According to KENHA, there has been an increase in trucks going into transit with their axles lifted.

“Our concern has been drawn to the rising cases of misuse of liftable axles within the National and Regional Trunk Road Network. This is from data that we have analysed from the various Static and Virtual Weighbridges located on the National Road Network.”

An axle-lift is often used by drivers to raise a set of wheels. This is often used to reduce road noise.

However, drivers are tampering with the switches as it is only allowed when a truck is not in motion.

Engineer Kennedy Ndugire, a senior KeNHA engineer in charge of axle load enforcement, said the practice is a violation of the law.

“Drivers are tampering with the liftable axles system in blatant violation of the Axle Load Limit Laws. The net effect of lifting the liftable axle for a loaded truck is that its allowable gross weight reduces as fewer axles will be carrying the same load. For Example, a six (6) axle truck allowed by law to carry 50 Tonnes will be allowed to carry 42 Tonnes with the lift axle up since only five (5) axles will be touching the ground.”

Squid Game: Three Receive Treatment During Netflix Show

Three people received medical treatment during filming of a real-life Squid Game show but “claims of serious injury are untrue”, Netflix said.

The game show, based on the South Korean hit series, is being filmed at Cardington Studios in Bedfordshire.

The streaming giant said three people were treated for “mild medical conditions”.

“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew,” Netflix said.

The show features 456 contestants vying for a $4.56m (£3.8m) prize.

A spokeswoman for Netflix said medics were on set at all times and that it had “invested in all the appropriate safety procedures”.

“While it was very cold on set – and participants were prepared for that – any claims of serious injury are untrue,” he said.

The thriller series told the story of debt-ridden contestants competing for a huge cash prize in a deadly series of twisted children’s games.

It holds the record as Netflix’s most-popular series of all time, and it was streamed by 111 million users in its first 28 days of its launch. A second series was announced in June.

The same month, Netflix also revealed plans for a 10-episode competition series, Squid Game: The Challenge, with the “largest cast and lump sum cash prize in reality TV history”.

The contestants – who have travelled to Bedfordshire from around the world – compete through a string of games inspired by the original show.

At the time of the announcement, Brandon Riegg, Netflix vice president of unscripted and documentary series, said: “Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery.

“We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment.

“Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists.”

The East of England Ambulance Service said it had not attended any calls at the studios in recent days.

KFCB Participates In Launch Of Man of the World Franchise Kenya

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) on 25th January 2023 participated at the launch of Man of the World Franchise Kenya, as one of the partners, held at the Nairobi Film Centre.

The annual international Beauty Pageant is designed to bring forth advocacy and emphasises on the importance of education and career development.

Ms. Nelly Muluka KFCB’s Corporate Communications Manager, represented the Board at the event, at which Mr. Bruce Matheka was crowned to represent Kenya in the 5th Edition of the beauty pageant to be held in Philippines, in April 2023.

Themed: Masculinity with Responsibility, the event seeks to create a platform for youths to promote and showcase their talents with the goal of strengthening Kenya’s global fashion industry that contributes to the realization of Vision 2030 Economic Pillar, the Manufacturing Pillar of the Big Four Agenda.

Ms. Muluka reiterated the Board’s commitment to partnering with creatives and like-minded public and private institutions in a bid to spur the growth of the industry for job and wealth creation.

Immigrant Farm Worker Charged With 7 Murders In Northern California Shooting

A 66-year-old immigrant farm worker was formally charged with premeditated murder on Wednesday in the fatal shooting of seven co-workers near San Francisco, the second of two gun rampages in California in recent days in which 18 people were killed.

Chunli Zhao, a Chinese citizen and the lone suspect in Monday’s massacre at two mushroom farms in the seaside town of Half Moon Bay, was formally presented with seven counts of murder and a single count of attempted murder during his first court appearance in nearby Redwood City.

Zhao, wearing red-colored jail garb and enclosed behind a glass panel, was ordered held without bond during a brief hearing before a San Mateo County Superior Court judge. The pudgy defendant, with close-cropped gray hair, was expressionless through the hearing. He was assigned two private defense lawyers; no plea was entered.

The next court proceeding in the case was set for Feb. 16.

A Mandarin-language translator was provided for the defendant, who according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe is a Chinese citizen who has lived in the United States for at least 10 years

After the hearing, Wagstaffe told reporters outside the courthouse that prosecutors have not yet determined Zhao’s precise immigration status, or whether he entered the country legally.

The prosecutor said authorities do have an idea about the suspect’s motives but declined to share any details. Wagstaffe also revealed the existence of one clue, saying a note was found inside Zhao’s car, though he declined to disclose what it said.

The district attorney said Zhao was “cooperative” when initially interviewed by authorities following his arrest and gave “a complete statement.”

Still, the expectation is that Zhao will enter a not-guilty plea as the proceedings progress, “and we want to make sure this man gets a fair trial,” Wagstaffe said.

In addition to eight felony counts, the 10-page criminal complaint alleges “special circumstances,” accusing Zhao of “personally and intentionally” shooting to kill.

Under California law, defendants convicted of murder with “special circumstances” can be eligible for the death penalty, though Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019 declared a moratorium on executions. The state has not put a condemned inmate to death since 2006.

Otherwise, the maximum sentence is life in prison without the possibility of parole, Wagstaffe said.

Late on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris paid a condolence visit to the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park, where 11 people were killed in a separate rampage at a ballroom dance hall on Saturday night by a gunman who later took his own life.

Harris, a California native, laid flowers at a memorial set up outside the dance studio, and in brief comments to reporters called for Congress to enact tougher national gun-safety measures. She then met privately with victims’ families.

NOT A ‘COPY CAT’

California’s firearm laws are among the strictest in the country, and the two shootings, coming in quick succession, left the state reeling from one of the bloodiest spates of mass gun violence in decades.

Authorities said each of the two killing sprees represented the single greatest loss of life from a single act of violence in Los Angeles and San Mateo counties.

Asked if investigators believed the Half Moon Bay killings were a “copy-cat” crime inspired by the shootings in Monterey Park two days earlier, Wagstaffe said flatly, “No.”

Zhao was taken into custody on Monday evening outside a sheriff’s station, where police said he had driven shortly after the attack on farm workers.

The precise motive for the shooting remained unclear. Zhao had been employed by one of the growers, Mountain Mushroom Farm, and had resided at the property along with some other employees, according to its owners. Authorities said early evidence indicated the bloodshed stemmed from a workplace grievance. The second crime scene, Concord Farms, is about a mile away.

Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a CNN interview that the gunman “went after and pursued” specific victims, even though he had the chance to hurt others and that he was a “co-worker or former co-worker” of the victims at both shooting sites.

She said Zhao was not known to law enforcement before Monday’s bloodshed. CNN and other media outlets have reported Zhao was the subject of a temporary restraining order after a former co-worker accused him of attacking and threatening him in 2013.

Half Moon Bay, a town of 12,000 residents south of San Francisco, is home to both a luxury resort and a low-income farming community. The shooting cast a renewed spotlight on hardships faced by the area’s farm workers, many of them immigrants from Latin America and Asia who often live in labor encampments and toil long hours under poor conditions for extremely low pay.

The killings there unfolded two days after a gunman 380 miles to the south opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a club frequented mostly by older patrons of Asian descent in Monterey Park.

In addition to the 11 people killed, nine were wounded in Saturday night’s gunfire, which some survivors and bystanders said they initially mistook for fireworks as the predominantly Asian-American community was celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Authorities said the assailant, Huu Can Tran, 72, drove a short time later to a second dance hall, where that club’s operator disarmed him before he could open fire.

The next morning, Tran shot himself to death behind the wheel of his vehicle as police closed in on him south of Los Angeles.

Although his motive remained unclear, Tran was a known regular of the Star Ballroom. A tenant of a Los Angeles-rental property he owned suggested that Tran may have been nursing a grudge against other patrons.

Both rampages were notable for the suspects’ age, much older than typical in deadly mass shootings that have grown all too commonplace in the United States.

Authorities said both gunmen used a semi-automatic pistols.

Russia’s Lavrov Blasts West In New Africa Tour

The Kremlin’s top diplomat slammed the West and praised Angola’s “balanced position” on international affairs on Wednesday as he pursued an African tour aimed at drumming support for Russia.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on his second visit to Africa in six months, held talks with President Joao Lourenco and his Angolan counterpart Tete Antonio.

His latest trip coincides with that of US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and comes a month after President Joe Biden hosted African leaders at the US-Africa summit in Washington.

Speaking after talks with Lourenco, Lavrov pledged Russia’s “mutual firm commitment to development in all areas” with Angola.

“We will do this despite illegal pressures from the United States and its allies,” he said.

He said was there was “unprecedented pressure of Western countries on the developing states of Asia, Africa and Latin America”.

Echoing President Vladimir Putin previous remarks, he said “the West is acting with the same colonial methods that it used to to exploit the developing continents.”

Lavrov, after he met his Angolan counterpart, earlier said Moscow “appreciates Angola’s balanced position at the United Nations”.

“Good relations between Russia and Angola are not subject to geo-political events, they are historic and based on a spirit of solidarity and support,” he said.

He arrived in Angola after visiting Eswatini and South Africa.

Since independence from Portugal in 1975, Angola has been led by the MPLA, a former Marxist liberation movement with historic ties to the Soviet Union.

But the oil-rich country has moved closer to the West through the years, fostering ties with the United States.

In October Angola voted for the first time to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations, having abstained in earlier votes.

Africa has become a renewed diplomatic battleground since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago.

China’s new foreign Minister, Qin Gang, visited Ethiopia, Gabon, Angola, Benin and Egypt earlier this month.

Lavrov last visited the continent in July last year, making stops in Egypt and Ethiopia, among other countries

Eight Missing After Ship Sinks Between Japan, South Korea

Japan and South Korea’s coast guards were searching Wednesday for eight crew from a cargo ship that sank between the two countries, after 14 others were rescued.

“A total of 14 have been rescued,” a spokesman for the Japanese coast guard told AFP.

“We don’t know their condition and nationalities yet,” he added, declining to be named.

He said six of the crew had been rescued by South Korea’s coast guard, which was assisting the operation.

Eleven of those rescued so far were “unconscious”, the Jeju Coast Guard told AFP, adding that the rescued crew members were being transported to Japan’s southwestern Nagasaki.

The Jin Tian sent a distress signal late on Tuesday evening from a position around 110 kilometres (68 miles) west of the remote and uninhabited Danjo islands in far southwestern Japan.

Three private ships were in the area and helped pick up several of the stranded crew members, Japan’s coast guard said.

A Japanese coast guard plane and two ships were at the scene, with additional Japanese and South Korean vessels en route, officials from both countries said.

The ship’s captain used a satellite phone to tell South Korean coast guard officials that he and the crew would abandon the sinking ship in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Jeju Coast Guard said.

Contact with the crew was then lost.

Japan’s government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed that the country’s coast guard was cooperating with South Korean authorities in the rescue mission.

The accident came as a cold snap hits much of Asia, with daytime temperatures in some of the Japanese islands nearest the rescue site reaching just three degrees Celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit).

The 6,651-ton Jin Tian is registered in Hong Kong, and the crew on board included 14 Chinese nationals and eight people from Myanmar, Japan’s coast guard said.

In 2020, a cargo ship with 43 crew and 6,000 cattle on board sank off southwestern Japan after being caught up in a typhoon. Two crew survived.
