Over 3,000 killed by the deadly virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo this year – and it’s not Ebola

Ebola outbreaks, such as the current one in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has claimed 2,074 people’s lives, are widely covered in the media. But another virus is ravaging the DRC with minimal publicity. That virus is measles.

Although measles has a much lower mortality rate than Ebola (around 2% compared with around 60%), there have been over 165,000 suspected cases of measles, with over 3,200 deaths in the DRC since the start of 2019.

In a recent speech, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), said that he was “embarrassed to talk only about Ebola” in response to questions on recent developments in the DRC.

Measles is proving fatal at an alarming rate, far faster than Ebola. In the week ending August 11, 2019, 5,600 cases were reported, with 141 deaths. Figures in the same week for Ebola were 63 confirmed cases and 45 deaths, meaning that, on average, measles is killing around three times as many people per week as Ebola.

For a vaccination programme to be effective, at least 92-95% of the population must be immunised – this creates so-called herd immunity. Another approach is ring vaccination.

This is where clusters of people who are particularly at risk are vaccinated. This approach can help to contain the spread of an outbreak, but with aid organisations facing attacks, community mistrust and under resourcing, even ring vaccination approaches are proving difficult to implement in both outbreaks.

Many local communities in the DRC mistrust medical workers. It stems from years of regional isolation and conflict. In some areas, this mistrust has even led to violence against the “wealthy” and “foreign” humanitarian aid workers, resulting in treatment centres being closed and the containment response being stalled for both Ebola and measles.

Thanks to the combination of rumours of Ebola being fabricated, conspiracies around vaccination programmes, and deeply held traditional beliefs, the difficulties in delivering aid don’t appear to be ending any time soon.

The perception that the international response to measles is minimal compared with the effort mounted against Ebola also stirs mistrust and anger within the DRC. Measles poses less of a threat globally and specifically to wealthy countries, as vaccination programmes are widespread and effective (about 92% coverage in the US and about 86% globally). In contrast, isolated Ebola cases in the US and other wealthy countries during the 2013–16 West Africa epidemic caused widespread public fear and outcry.

Future-proofing humanitarian aid

Even countries with well-developed healthcare systems would struggle to contain an Ebola outbreak, while a measles outbreak in a country with widespread immunity would have far less social, medical and economic impact.

In July 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the current Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, partly in response to international pressure and fear of the disease spreading to other countries. Measles has been given no such status.

Although Ebola poses a greater threat than measles in wealthy countries, within the DRC measles is causing more illness and death, but has generated a smaller international response. The WHO has raised almost US$114m for combating the DRC Ebola outbreak, while barely US$2.5m has been raised to combat measles.

This is especially relevant when considering that an aspect of public resistance stems from the response teams only treating Ebola, whereas, from a community perspective, diseases such as measles and malaria are far greater threats to their lives. For example, malaria was responsible for over 27,000 deaths in the DRC in 2017.

How then should the international community respond to outbreaks to protect both the overall health of a community and the global spread of a specific disease? Perhaps the solution is as recently proposed by Doctors Without Borders and The Alliance for International Medical Action. They suggested that instead of the international community delivering targeted aid for only Ebola, resources should be deployed to strengthen local infrastructure and provide a decentralised capacity to provide care to all communities.

This may enable a country to contain an Ebola outbreak while still responding to outbreaks of other infectious and non-infectious diseases, providing better care for local communities. By using international resources to strengthen local infrastructure, it might be possible to create more resilient community health systems capable of responding to future outbreaks, possibly without needing international support. The Conversation

This has been revealed in the Airports Council International(ACI) latest World Airport Traffic Report, which highlights top airports for passengers, cargo and aircraft movements and showcases the world’s fastest-growing airports for 2018.

JKIA was ranked 2nd in the ‘Fastest Growing Airports (Handing over 250,000 metric tons of air cargo)’ category, after handling over 342,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2018, a 25% growth from the what was reported in the year 2017.

JKIA has recently witnessed a significant boost in air cargo traffic to and from Europe, Asia, America, and most recently China and Australia. This is what has culminated in JKIA being an emerging force and destination in the air cargo industry.

Through deliberate planning and embracing public and private sector participation, the airport has registered a steady transformation in the way air cargo is managed.

In the last few years, JKIA has seen the entry of several modern transit sheds, increasing it’s annual overall cargo to 1.2million tons. Michaell Cotts, a leading cargo and logistics company, is currently constructing its new shed at JKIA, once complete, the new development is expected to inject an additional annual capacity of 150,000 metric tons at the airport.

Astral Aviation, a cargo airline operating from JKIA has in the last year acquired three Boeing 747-400 cargo aircraft to boost its freight capacity and expand its network.

“This award validates our ongoing efforts in improving facilities at the JKIA Cargo area. I would like to congratulate all our stakeholders for their collective and ongoing efforts in making this possible.” Andersen noted.

“This is an exciting time for Kenya, the face of cargo is changing, and we are positioning JKIA as the premier cargo distribution center for online commerce companies in the region,” he added.

It says that the organization upholds and promotes morality in society and shall not be stocking the book entitled ‘Blood Ties’.

Billionaire Njenga Karume’s granddaughter dies of cancer due to lack of funds

Michelle Wariara Karume, the granddaughter of the late Njenga Karume succumbed to cancer on Saturday and died in the United States. She had begged for funds to cater for her medical bills from the trustees | PHOTO COURTESY

BY FAITH MUTETE – Michelle Wariara Karume, the granddaughter of the late Njenga Karume succumbed to cancer on Saturday and died in the United States. She had begged for funds to cater for her medical bills from the trustees of the multibillion shilling estate of the late Karume who did not respond as expected and availed the money when it’s too late.

According to family sources, the money arrived in May this year when it was too late. She wrote an email to George Waireri, one of the trustees and copied to her relatives

But, Mr. Waireri said the death had nothing to do with lack of funds and that she had suffered under the disease for a long time which overpowered her and took away her life.

This, however, was disputed by Peter Munge, the lawyer for Karume’s children, who said Michelle died because she could not access treatment because of lack of funds.

In an email Michelle wrote, she expressed the amount of pain she was going through and pleaded with the trustees to avail the funds for her treatment, stating what the use of her grandfather’s money was, if it could not serve the purpose of helping her health.

Karume’s children have been embroiled in a case where they want the trustees kicked out.

The other two trustees of Karumes wealth are, Kung’u Gatabaki and Margaret Nduta Kamithi.

EPL Match Day 5: One-horse race already? Liverpool on a roll, City see blues

Crowning Liverpool the moral champions | FOOTBALL365

One horse slips…

They are human after all.

Yes, the champions of England can be beaten.

That honor fell to lowly Norwich City, the 2018/19 champions of the second-tier English football competition, the Championship, the route through which Norwich earned promotion to the English Premier League (EPL)

Final score in the late kick-off game on Saturday at Carrow Road: Norwich City 3 – 2 Man City.

Yes, it took Norwich City to apply the brakes on the juggernaut, the behemoth, the seemingly immovable object that is Manchester City – who by winning the last two EPL titles, had amassed an unprecedented total of 198 points in the process!

What a shocker, coming right after the season’s first international break, partly aided by a piece of calamitous defending from City defender Nicolas Otamendi who appears to have borrowed a leaf from Arsenal’s defensive strategy rule book (more on that later)

By the way City now have only one recognizable defender in, well, the same Nicolas Otamendi.

On Tuesday, City announced that John Stones will be out for upwards of 6 weeks following an injury sustained in Ukraine while training ahead of their Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The champions had already lost first-choice center-half Aymeric Laporte to injury- he will be out of action until, at least, February 2020, while talismanic captain Vincent Kompany departed for Belgium in the immediate aftermath of City’s victorious 2018/19 campaign, with no replacement being sought.

This, coming at a time when 8 of the last 12 goals City have conceded in the EPL have come through set-pieces, 4 of them from corners, including Norwich City’s first; – time for other teams to have a go at the champions?

The other horse pulls 5 steps ahead…

By the time the Norwich – City game was kicking off on Saturday, runaway leaders Liverpool had opened a five-point gap at the top of the log, after brushing aside Newcastle 3-1 in the very first Match Day 5 game following the international break, to make it 5 wins in 5.

This makes Liverpool only the 4th team to win 14 top-flight fixtures in a row, equal with Arsenal who also went 14 without defeat in 2002 and only one behind City’s run of 15 in a row this year (which was ended by Tottenham at the Etihad) and 4 behind the 18 consecutive wins achieved by the champions in 2017.

Can Liverpool go all the way…unbeaten?

Could they?

Chelsea, Tottenham on fire, Man U lucky, Arsenal pegged back

Elsewhere, Chelsea scored 5, yes, 5 goals to see off winless Wolves 5-2 at the Molineux, while at the new Tottenham Stadium Spurs got 4 unanswered goals against Crystal Place.

For Chelsea, it appears new manager Frank Lampard’s faith in youth is paying off. All 11 of their Premier League goals so far this season have been scored by English academy players who the club had sent out on loan in the Championship last season; – Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori getting on the scoresheet against Wolves.

Manchester Unit labored to 1-nil victory against Leicester at Old Trafford with Marcus Rashford netting the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Separately, Arsenal threw away a 2-goal half-time lead to draw 2-2 at bottom of the table Watford, thanks to what has become customary; – two schoolboy defensive mistakes costing them victory.

Aston Villa’s ‘own goal’

Match Day 5 ended with a drab Monday Night 0-0 draw between newly-promoted Aston Villa and top six – chasing West Ham United.

The only incident of note in the match happened in the first half when Villa defender Tyrone Mings’ attempt to tongue-lash team-mate Anwar El Ghazi for not tracking back, resulted in an apparent headbutt between the pair: – leaving the referee and VAR with a tough decision to make – should the two have been sent off?

Well, the match officials didn’t see any bloodied noses in the aftermath of the incident, so, let’s just say, it’s all right!

Full results

Liverpool 3 – 1 Newcastle, Sheffield Utd. 0 – 1 Southampton, Man Utd. 1 – 0 Leicester, Brighton 1 – 1 Burnley, Wolves 2 – 5 Chelsea, Tottenham 4 – 0 Crystal Palace, Norwich 3 – 2 Man City, Bournemouth 3 – 1 Everton, Watford 2 – 2 Arsenal, Aston Villa 0 – 0 West Ham

Golden boot race

Sergio Aguero (7 goals, I assist), Tammy Abraham (7 goals, O assists), Teemu Pukki (6 goals, 2 assists), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (5 goals, O assists), Raheem Sterling (5 goals, O assists), Mohamed Salah (4 goals, 2 assists), Sadio Mane (4 goals, I assist), Ashley Barnes (Norwich, 4 goals, 0 assists)

Adios Javi Garcia….

As widely expected, Javi Garcia became the first EPL manager to be shown the door after seeing Watford go 4 matches without a win. He was replaced by former Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores, whose first act was to mastermind a come-from-behind 2-all draw against Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Wolves, who by all standards had a stand-out 2018/19 season upon promotion, remain winless after 5 games; – should Nuno Espirito Santo, the charismatic Wolves boss – the only ‘black’ EPL Manager, be worried?

EPL Table after 5 matches (points)

  1. Liverpool (15), 2. Man City (10), 3. Tottenham (8), 4. Man Utd. (8), 5. Leicester (8), 6. Chelsea (8), 7. Arsenal (8), 8. West Ham (8), 9. Bournemouth (7), 10. Southampton (7), 11. Everton (7), 12. Crystal Palace (7), 13. Norwich (6), 14. Burnley (5), 15. Sheffield Utd. (5), 16. Brighton (5), 17. Aston Villa (4), 18. Newcastle (4), 19. Wolves (3), 20. Watford (2)
