While presiding over the destruction, Nyando OCPD Leonard Matete said police officers nabbed the banned substance along Kisumu-Nairobi road.

After a rigorous court process, the Police were given the go-ahead to destroy the stash in full glare of the public as a testament against drug trafficking.

Matete thanked members of the public who tipped the police off, enabling them to impound the consignment which originated from Busia, along the Kenya-Uganda border.

He urged residents to keep reporting incidents and leads and on its part, the police would continue to be vigilant along the highway to make more arrest of offenders.

French Tutors swear to teach ‘critical lessons’ after a teacher was beheaded

Shocked French teachers vowed to continue encouraging their pupils’ “critical spirit” by raising contested subjects after an Islamic terrorist beheaded a secondary school teacher who showed his students caricatures of the Prophet as part of a freedom of speech discussion.

Representatives of teaching unions met the education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer and the prime minister Jean Castex on Saturday, hours after the death of 47-year-old history and geography teacher Samuel Paty.

Before the meeting Jean-Remi Girard, president of the secondary school teaching union, said teachers were “devastated” but would not be cowed. We will try to encourage our students’ critical spirit and explain that everyone has the right to disagree.”

Rallies were expected in cities across France on Sunday in a show of solidarity and defiance, with Blanquer telling France 2: “It is absolutely important to show our mobilisation and our solidarity, our national cohesion.”

He called on everyone to support the teachers. Police were questioning his parents, grandfather and 17-year-old brother and yesterday detained another five including the father of a pupil at the school and an acquaintance of his known to the intelligence services.

The father of one school pupil published a video on YouTube calling the teacher a “thug” who needed to “go back to school himself” and calling on parents to join him in demanding that the teacher face disciplinary action.

The teacher had gone to the local police station, with the school head, earlier this month after a legal complaint about his lesson.

The teacher lived near the school and was used to walking through a wood to get home, but had recently decided to change his route to walk through a residential area because he felt threatened.

Orengo assures Uhuru of support of his House agenda

President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on parliament to prioritise legislation that supports the attainment of the Government’s Big 4 development agenda. “There are certain bills out there that we really need to equally fast track. And some of them are either stuck in the National Assembly or stuck in the Senate or stuck in-between with a push and pull between the two parties.  “If there’s something that’s going to prevent us from achieving that Big 4 Agenda, it will be these things (bills) which are important that we iron out so that we can actually get to our destination within the time period that we have all identified.

That should be our key objective,” the President said.  The Head of State spoke Saturday afternoon at State House, Nairobi during a meeting with the entire leadership of Kenya’s parliament.  The meeting was convened to introduce the Head of State to new house and committee leaders of  both senate and national assembly following the recent reorganization of the committees.

The President hailed the composition of the new parliamentary structure where opposition members have been incorporated into house and committee leadership positions as indicative of the desired new Kenya. “I believe this is the first true session of the leadership of Parliament that is truly reflective of the way in which we want our country to go.

We are not sitting here as Jubilee, as ODM, as Ford Kenya, as KANU, as Wiper, as ANC, we are actually sitting here as the leadership of Kenya discussing matters pertaining to the wellbeing of our people and to the future of our nation.  “And that is something that gives me immense pleasure and delight because I really believe that through this, I am beginning to see the new beginnings of the kind of Kenya that we want to see,” the President said. The Head of State encouraged parliamentarians to seek accurate information on the various national government initiatives saying uninformed political pronouncements on programs such as Huduma Namba were misleading the public.

At the same time, the President urged politicians to tame their ambitions so as to allow the Government to leverage on existing tranquility occasioned by the handshake between him and opposition leader Raila Odinga to develop the country.  “Why can’t we just tame our ambitions and take advantage of this rare situation, to say, those things that we disagree on we just put them aside, those things that we agree on, we shall deliver for our people and for our country,” the Head of State rallied the legislators.

Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka thanked the Head of State for intervening in the Senate revenue sharing stalemate and assured the President of Senate’s commitment to supporting the Government’s legislative agenda.  “On behalf of the Senate, I want to also take this opportunity to thank you because for about three months, we were famous for adjournments on the formula issue. It took your intervention, Your Excellency to bring that stalemate to an end,” Speaker Lusaka said.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi called for constant engagement between the executive and the legislature, and proposed the creation of liason office in each ministry.  Senate Majority and Minority Leaders Samuel Poghisio and James Orengo as well as their National Assembly counterparts Amos Kimunya and John Mbadi also spoke at the meeting.  Senator Poghisio urged the President to convene regular consultations with Parliament’s leadership while his National Assembly counterpart Amos Kimunya introduced the new leaders to the Head of State.

Senator Orengo assured the Head of State that both the opposition and the ruling party were united in pushing the Government’s agenda in Parliament, a message that was restated by his National Assembly counterpart John Mbadi.

West Ham have signed Algeria winger Said Benrahma from Brentford

Benrahma, 25, joins on loan for £5m but the Hammers have an obligation to make the transfer permanent for £20m, with a further £5m possible in add-ons.

He completed the first part of his medical on Thursday but an issue had arisen, which was resolved in time for the deal to go ahead on Friday.

Benrahma said he had joined a “massive” and “historic” club in West Ham.

He added: “I like this prospect [of playing in the Premier League]. I play football to enjoy myself first and foremost, but it’s always enjoyable to know you’re joining the most-watched league in the world, so I am definitely looking forward to showing what I can do.

“West Ham is a historic club, which has been in the Premier League for a very long time. It included and still includes good players. It is a massive club in England.”

Manager David Moyes said: “We have been looking to bring in players who are hungry and determined to progress and get better.

“Said is an exciting talent with a lot of ability and the right qualities, who will complement the other attacking players we have at the club.”

Benrahma, who will wear the number nine shirt at London Stadium, scored 17 goals in 43 Championship appearances last season as Brentford reached the play-off final.

The Bees signed Benrahma from French club Nice for less than £3m two years ago.

Although the transfer window closed on 5 October for Premier League clubs to sign players from abroad, they were allowed to conduct business with Football League teams until 17:00 BST on Friday.

Tottenham sign Joe Rodon from Swansea

Tottenham have signed Wales centre-back Joe Rodon from Swansea on a five-year deal for an initial £11m plus add-ons.

Rodon, 22, made 54 appearances for the Championship club having made his Swans debut during the 2018-19 campaign.

He started all three of Wales’ matches during the international break to take his tally to seven caps.

Rodon is Spurs’ seventh signing of the season and he joins compatriots Ben Davies and Gareth Bale, who re-signed for Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid.

Rodon’s arrival adds depth to Spurs’ defence, which has seen the departures of centre-backs Jan Vertonghen to Benfica and Juan Foyth to Villarreal on loan.

Although the transfer window closed on 5 October for Premier League clubs to sign players from abroad, they were allowed to conduct business with Football League teams until 17:00 BST on Friday.

Jubile woes: court case haunts Murkomen and Kihika

The High Court of Kenya on Thursday, October 15 ordered Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Nakuru’s Susan Kihika to foot legal fees incurred by the political outfit and other respondents after the two legislators took the party to court.

Murkomen and Kihika not only sued Jubilee party but also the party chairman Nelson Dzuya and Secretary General Raphael Tuju when they sought to overturn a coalition deal between KANU and the ruling party.

However, Murkomen and Kihika later withdrew the case only for the matter to later haunt them. This happened after Jubilee, Dzuya, KANU and Tuju filed a petition seeking compensation for the legal costs they incurred when hiring lawyers to represent them in court.

In his ruling, Justice James Makau agreed with the petition and directed the two senators to pay half the legal fees of all the respondents.

“The first to fourth respondents be and hereby awarded costs at 50 per cent of costs as shall be taxed by the taxing master,” Justice Makau ruled. In their defense, the two law makers argued they filed the case in the interest of the public and that they withdrew the case just after they filed it.

Murkomen and Kihika had just been defrocked from key party positions in the senate at the time they filed the case.

The two senators allied to Deputy President Wiliam Ruto retreated from challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to sign a post-election deal with KANU.

President Uhuru off to Tsavo for a busy bonding weekend ahead of BBI Report release

President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived at the KWS Law Enforcement Academy in Manyani a few minutes to 11

At hand to receive him were Dp William Ruto, CS Matiang’i among others

The head of state is scheduled to Chair a Cabinet meeting, receive progress reports of several national security sector technology projects and preside over an innovation exhibition by young Kenyan techies.

The meetings have been dubbed ‘bonding session’, however sources indicate that President Kenyatta is expected to rally support for his agenda, given the realities being experienced, including the fallout with his deputy William Ruto.

The meeting away from Nairobi in the serenity of Tsavo National Park will also be a moment to consolidate Cabinet in the midst of a clear differences by ministers and DP some being accused of disrespecting the 2nd in command.

A few weeks ago, Environment CS Keriako Tobiko termed the DP as a mere clerk in Kenyatta’s Cabinet.

It’s also reported that in the last cabinet meeting at statehouse five cabinet secretaries had hit out at Ruto of campaigning against a government he is part of.

In the president’s busy weekend, he is also tomorrow, scheduled to host parliamentary leadership from both houses at state house for a session to discuss the yet to be released BBI document.

The Building Bridges Initiative report is likely to be released as soon as this weekend.

The much awaited BBI report is set to roll, as part of the proposals will require to go through parliament as the rest will head to a referendum as indicated by BBI proponents.

DP William Ruto is laying ground to oppose the report with his troops readying for political duel that will have ODM leader Raila Odinga and president Uhuru on other side.

Ruto is keen to use the referendum moment to endear himself to voters as his hustler narrative is quickly gaining ground ahead of the 2022 polls.
