Speaking at the Kilifi Governor’s office, Mr Badawy said the move is meant to provide a first-hand assistance towards mitigating the effects of the corona virus cases.

“We have been able to quickly reposes funding to be able to provide first hand support to counties including in Kilifi County through the UN volunteers. These are our frontline soldiers dealing with the pandemic and we wish to tell them to also stay safe as we fight this worldwide problem.

Also through this generous support, we have been able to make available 50 UN volunteers to serve in 14 counties,” said Mr Badawy.

The launching ceremony for the volunteers was done in Kajiado County recently and Mr Badawy said they will offer crucial support in combating the Covid-19 pandemic.

Already Kilifi has received two volunteers, one working at the Kilifi county referral while the other one is based at Gede Health centre in Kilifi North.

Mr Badawy said his agency will continue to engage with state and non-state actors to make sure there is long lasting peace in Kenya which will shape up and ensure maximum development.

“We cannot have development without peace and again we can’t have peace without development. The two go hand in hand and we need to include the youths and the vulnerable in our societies. The business of peace is not finished and it must continue to ensure that one can sleep well and leave in a stable community,” he said.

Swedish Ambassador to Kenya, Caroline Vicini has lauded the Kilifi county government for implementating the mental health programme. – By Ramadhan Kambi.

Speaking at the Governor’s office in Kilifi town, Ms Vicini said the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic had pinned many people in the world and led to mental challenges which every government in the world needs to address at large.

“I was very uplifted to hear about the Kilifi mental health program. During this pandemic, we have been very eager to keep social distance that we don’t see the other side of it. For example what becomes of those hidden behind the closed doors of our homes, what about the people in isolation or those unable to interact with us as used to. I see that Kilifi County is forward kneeling to address those challenges,” said the ambassador.

She also hailed both the county and the national government on their efforts to address the issues of gender based violence which she said was a global problem that needs support of each person.

“We have seen increasing gender based violence not only in Kenya but even in my home country as well. Then we have the frustration of staying home after having lost jobs and having complicated economic situation and also the situation of having children at home is beyond measure for many people,” said Ms Vicini.

She lauded the ministry of education for its partial reopening of schools saying that children actual needs to be at schools despite challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I was happy today when I drove from the airport I saw many young children going back to school and I think that is really a great advantage for them to be able to take their schooling again,” she said.

Kilifi county health executive Charles Karisa who represented Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi said that the county had installed several mental centres in its health institutions around the county to address mental instability among residents.

“If you go to almost all our health institutions, we have a number of centres where we carry out mental assessment to our people. We understand that the current situation has led to many residents facing different mental challenges but we are addressing this as a county,” said Mr Dadu.

The ambassador is on a field mission tour together with its partners the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The ambassador will also visit Mombasa County.

Coronavirus: France opts for night-time curfew to battle second wave

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a night-time curfew in Paris and eight other cities to try to curb the rapid spread of coronavirus.

The measure – from 21:00 to 06:00 – will come into effect from Saturday and last for at least four weeks, Mr Macron said in a televised interview.

A public health emergency has also been declared.

Meanwhile Germany announced that bars and restaurants in higher-risk areas must close early.

Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the tightened restrictions on Wednesday as the country recorded more than 5,000 new infections for the first time since April.

On Thursday, that number rose again, with 6,638 cases recorded – the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic.

Under the new rules, areas where infections exceed 50 per 100,000 inhabitants, bars and restaurants must close their doors by 23:00. Private gatherings will be limited to 10 people from two households.

Across Europe, governments are introducing new restrictions to battle a second wave of infections.

A partial lockdown has come into force in the Netherlands and cafes and restaurants are closing.

Earlier, Spain’s north-eastern region of Catalonia said bars and restaurants would close for 15 days from Thursday.

The Czech Republic has shut schools and bars. It has the highest rate of infection in Europe over the past two weeks, at 581.3 cases per 100,000 people.

The Irish government announced a ban on household visits from Thursday night, but childcare and visits on compassionate grounds will still be allowed.

What are the new measures in France?

The night-time curfew will apply to the capital Paris and its suburbs as well as Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Saint-Etienne, Rouen, Toulouse, Grenoble and Montpellier.

Affecting around 22 million people, it will be applied for four weeks to begin with and Mr Macron’s government will seek to extend it to six.

The measures will stop people visiting restaurants and private homes during the evening and night-time, Mr Macron explained.

Residents will need a valid reason to be outside their homes during the hours of curfew, the president said, adding that he understood that a curfew was a “hard” thing to ask people to do.

Essential trips will be permitted. Anyone found breaking the curfew will be fined €135 (£121).

Schools will remain open and people will still be able to travel between regions during the day.

Additionally, no more than six people will be allowed to gather inside private homes, but exemptions will be made for large households, Mr Macron explained.

Businesses that suffer financially due to the new measures will be eligible for state aid, he said, adding that a second nationwide lockdown would be “disproportionate”.

“The message I want to send this evening is that I need each of you, we need each other, to find solutions,” the president said. “We will get through this, together.”

Elsewhere in Europe

  • Catalonia also said restaurants in the region of about 7.5 million people would only be allowed to serve takeaway. Gyms and cultural venues will be allowed to operate at 50% capacity, while shops and large shopping centres must be limited to 30% capacity
  • On Wednesday Italy recorded its highest daily rise in infections since mass testing began with 7,332 new cases confirmed
  • In Portugal, the government said gatherings would be limited to five people from Thursday. Weddings and baptisms can be attended by up to 50 people but university parties will be banned. A three-week partial lockdown began late on Tuesday in the Czech Republic, with schools, university halls, bars and clubs all shut. There have been 1,106 deaths from Covid-19 since 1 March, and more than 8,000 new cases were announced on Wednesday, for only the second time since the pandemic began.
  • Poland has reported 116 deaths in the past 24 hours – its highest number since the start of the pandemic – and a record 6,526 new cases
  • Belgian officials have warned that if current rates of infection continue, all the country’s 2,000 intensive care beds could be filled by mid-November

Firefighters Continue Battling Mount Kilimanjaro Fire

Firefighters are beginning a fifth day Thursday trying to contain a forest fire in a conservation area on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak.

Tanzania’s minister of natural resources and tourism, Hamisi Kigwangalla, said Wednesday that the fire is threatening the alpine ecological zone, which is inhabited by various creatures including birds, snakes and lizards.

Kigwangalla said dry conditions, strong winds, and the location of the fire are hampering efforts to bring it under control.

The Citizen newspaper reports Kigwangalla said Wednesday that the government will buy helicopters to bolster efforts to fight wildfires.

He also directed the Tanzania National Park Agency to upgrade firefighting infrastructure.

Initial reports indicate the fire was caused by porters heating food for climbers on Sunday, but the probe into the blaze continues.

There have been no reports of human casualties.

Opinion: Can a Ruto- Uhuru handshake happen?

UHURU RUTO HAND SHAKE

After being sidelined since 2018, Dr. William Samoei Ruto has tendered for a handshake with his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This follows the floating of a restricted political tender by the leadership of faith organizations after it became apparent that the DP will not let go of the Jubilee Party.

The documents are now being evaluated by the Archbishop Anthony Muheria led committee, consisting of representatives of various organizations.

The gains have been instant. The DP has been allowed to deliver wheelbarrows and cash to Kisii County, hitherto a no go zone.

Is the DP Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta handshake tenable?

The once lovely duo has had a topsy-turvy political relationship spanning back to 2002.

Ruto, then a youthful cabinet Minister in the collapsing Nyayo cabinet joined a team that backed the Uhuru-Moi project.

Then a soft-spoken Eldoret North MP, Ruto, Internal Minister Julius Ole Sunkuli, Samuel Poghisio, and Justin Muturi were chief strategists in the Uhuru for president campaign.

Ruto, Sunkuli, and David Murathe planned the political fall of then-Vice President George Saitoti, replacing him with Mulembe strongman, Musalia Mudavadi.

Then the Kibaki, Raila, and Kalonzo juggernaut descended on the aging KANU machine and extinguished Uhuru’s March to state House.

Uhuru went on to form a shadow opposition Government in Parliament in 2003. Ruto was one of the ministers.

Post Election Unity pact

The duo remained together until KANU implored. With Nicholas Biwott pieces up the pieces, Ruto embraced ODM and Uhuru “went back home to Jubilee”

They were later reunited at the ICC in the Hague after each was charged with murder, rape, and displacement of the population in the nasty 2007 post-election violence.

The unity pact was not voluntary. It was a special vehicle procured for political survival and a vessel to ferry them to State House. It worked.

The reason was simple. The GEMA and Kalenjin had fought a fierce battle in 2008 over whether Kibaki (supported by Uhuru) and Raila (supported by Ruto) won the election.

Uhuruto galvanized their communities to a protest vote against the ICC. Not even the choices have consequences cliche could stop them.

The end result of the “unity” was the election of Uhuruto to the presidency, making history as the first head of state to be elected while facing murder and rape charges at the Hague.

Betking premier league full fixtures

Betking premier league full fixtures are out even as the football Kenya Federation is still grappling with the 20 Nov 2020 date. Clearance from the ministry of sports, given the stringent Covid-19 protocols stands in the way. However FKF president Nick Mwendwa has sort to assure the safe return of of the league as all participants will undergo mandatory testing among other control measures that will ensure safety of participants.

Citing the Harambee stars match versus Zambia as a boost to to return of the beautiful game. Ironically grassroot football is in top gear as fans through grounds to cheer without safety gear. A Mashujaa day match between AFC LEOPARDS VS Shabana in Kisii on Oct 20 will also be an indicator to safe return to football activities.

Brutal Museveni forces arrest popstar come opposition leader Bobi wine

Ugandan security forces have detained presidential hopeful Bobi Wine on Wednesday during a raid of the campaign headquarters of his newly formed party, according to his lawyer.

The pop star-turned-politician, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has previously been arrested numerous times as he has rattled the governing party of President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the East African nation since 1986.

Bobi Wine’s lawyer Anthony Wameli said his client was seized on Wednesday at the Kampala offices of his opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP).

“The police and the army raided the office of NUP, sealed off the premises and all the roads leading to the place before detaining Bobi Wine and other party officials,” Wameli told the AFP news agency.

“This is despicable and an attack on democracy by the partisan police and the army,” he said. The reason for the raid was unknown but “politics cannot be ruled out”, he added.

Earlier, Bobi Wine had said in a Twitter post police and military officers raided the offices of his party, decrying what he described as the securities agencies’ “stinking” partnership with the establishment in the lead-up to general elections set for 2021.

“The military and police just raided our head office in Kamwokya,” he said, referring to an area in the capital, Kampala. “They have broken into offices and taken away valuable documents and other items. Some comrades have been injured. The partisanship of security agencies ahead of the election is stinking,” he said

Bobi Wine was meeting other NUP leaders when the police swooped in and cordoned off the area, according to party official David Lewis Rubongoya.

Rubongoya, who was at the scene, told The Associated Press news agency that the security officers confiscated items such as security cameras and supplies of red berets that are symbols of Wine’s popular campaign.

“They have taken away everything,” he said.

There was no immediate comment by the security agencies.

Bobi Wine has captured the imagination of many young Ugandans with his persistent calls for President Yoweri Museveni to retire. Since he expressed his presidential ambition, police and the military have repeatedly dispersed his rallies and beaten and detained his supporters.

Museveni, 76, has ruled Uganda since taking power by force in 1986. Critics accuse him of relying on the armed forces to stay in power. He is able to seek another term after the legislature voted to remove constitutional age limits on the presidency.

Museveni accuses Bobi Wine of encouraging young people to riot and has charged that people associated with him are “a misguided group being used by some foreigners to destabilise” Uganda.

France continues its dominance over Croatia

Kylian Mbappe scored the winner as France kept up their unbeaten Nations League record by beating Croatia in a repeat of the 2018 World Cup final.

Mbappe converted his 16th international goal with 11 minutes remaining from Lucas Digne’s brilliant cross.

Antoine Griezmann had crashed in the opener via the underside of the bar after eight minutes.

Ex-Everton midfielder Nikola Vlasic poked in an equalizer in the Group A3 match, before Mbappe struck.

Croatia should have found another equaliser in injury time but ex-Leicester striker Andrej Kramaric scuffed a shot straight at Hugo Lloris from inside the box.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial somehow side-footed wide from six yards out for France, while Ivan Perisic curled a free-kick narrowly over.

In Group A3’s other game, defending champions Portugal – minus Cristiano Ronaldo – comfortably beat Sweden 3-0 to stay top.

Liverpool’s new signing Diogo Jota scored twice, with Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva getting the other goal.

Nations league Round-up

England 0-1 Denmark

Harry Maguire’s miserable start to the season continued with a red card as England had two men sent off for the first time in their Nations League defeat by Denmark.

Manchester United’s captain suffered a 31-minute nightmare, shown a yellow card for a reckless early challenge on Yussuf Poulsen and then dismissed by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano after he brought down Kasper Dolberg trying to retrieve his own poor touch.

England’s night got worse four minutes later when Christian Eriksen scored his 34th goal for Denmark on his 100th appearance after Kyle Walker was harshly adjudged to have fouled Thomas Delaney.

Chelsea defender Reece James was shown a red card after the final whistle for confronting referee Manzano.

In a low-key affair, England had their moments and it took a magnificent save from Kasper Schmeichel to claw away Mason Mount’s close-range header as Denmark closed out the win

Scotland go eight unbeaten for best run in 32 years

Scotland 1-0 Czech Republic

Scotland made it eight games unbeaten – their best run in 32 years – as they resisted intense second-half pressure for a hard-fought Nations League win over the Czech Republic at Hampden.

Ryan Fraser’s sixth-minute finish gave the hosts a lead they clung on to.

Steve Clarke’s men defended resolutely – and were grateful for an incredible Tomas Soucek miss – to go four points clear at the top of Group B.

Substitute Williams gives Wales late win

Bulgaria 0-1 Wales

Substitute Jonny Williams grabbed a late victory for a depleted Wales side in Bulgaria which keeps them top of their Nations League group.

With leading players such as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey missing through injury, their younger understudies showed signs of promise but lacked a cutting edge for much of the game.

It was a dramatic way to snatch victory and, with the decisive cross coming from Neco Williams, there were echoes of Wales’ win over Bulgaria in last month’s reverse fixture – when the

Dallas own goal extends poor Northern Ireland run

Norway 1-0 Northern Irelannd

Liverpool teenager had scored an injury-time winner as a substitute.

A much-changed Northern Ireland suffered their third consecutive Nations League defeat as a Stuart Dallas own goal gave Norway victory in Oslo. The Leeds United winger deflected a corner into his own net in the 67th minute.

Manager Ian Baraclough made 10 changes to the side that lost to Austria on Sunday and they produced a solid, hard-working display.

It extends a poor run in the Nations League for Northern Ireland, who have now picked up just one point from eight games since the competition began two years ago.
