Kanye West joins #EndSARS protests in Nigeria

US rapper Kanye West has joined a growing list of international celebrities speaking out in support of large protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)US rapper Kanye West has joined a growing list of international celebrities speaking out in support of large protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

“I stand with my Nigerian brothers and sisters to end police brutality, the government must answer to the peoples cries #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria,” West tweeted Monday.

The protests in cities across Nigeria came after weeks of outcry online from young people in the country over claims of kidnapping, harassment and extortion by a police unit known as the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).

Using the hashtag #EndSARS on social media, international celebrities joined Nigerians in the campaign to end police brutality in all its forms.

Blessing Timidi Digha, one of the protesters who was present on both days, told CNN the demonstrators’ demands included justice for those brutalized by the police unit, reform of the police and an end to all forms of police brutality.

But protests continued in Lagos, Abuja and Kwara on Monday, with young Nigerians saying they would continue to take to the streets until the entire police force was reformed.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Iam only asymptomatic

According to a statement released by the Portuguese football federation on Tuesday confirmed the 35-year-old is asymptomatic and feeling fine,  though he will be in self-isolation.

“Following the positive case, the remaining players underwent new tests this Tuesday morning, all with a negative result, and are available to Fernando Santos for training this afternoon, in Cidade do Futebol.

Rest of Portugal squad tested negative on Tuesday and are available for Wednesday’s game in Lisbon
Ronaldo has played in both of Portugal’s matches so far during the international break, starting in a friendly against Spain in Lisbon and then playing the full game in their 0-0 draw with France on Sunday.

This means he will miss Portugal’s Uefa Nations League clash with Sweden on Wednesday and is also a doubt for Juventus’ upcoming fixtures against Crotone and Dynamo Kyiv.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services has embarked on key works at the Nairobi Lunar Park, a recreational centre that was converted into a Bus Terminus.

A spot check by Uzalendo News revealed that NMS is currently laying the foundation as well as constructing a box culvert, part of the works at the Nairobi Green bus Park.

Once complete, Public service vehicles operating from Machakos, Mombasa, Ngong road, Lang’ata road, and Ongata Rongai will end their trips outside the CBD.

The Green Park Terminus is aimed at decongesting the City and pave way for efficient transport means within the CBD.

The land was acquired by the NMS from Kenya Railways for constructing a bus terminus. The bus terminus will be named Green Park bus terminus and will be serving PSVs operating Mombasa, Ngong, and Lang’ata Road.

“Changes that are coming are for good. We are in the process of reducing traffic flow with CBD and one way to ensure that is to ensure PSVs have bus terminus.” NMS Maj. Mohammed Badi said.

The renown contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is undertaking the project as part of the larger Nairobi expressway works set to revolutionize transport in the capital.

CRBC is currently constructing the 27Km Nairobi expressway that runs from Mlolongo and terminates at James Gichuru.

Kositany: ‘Deep state’ wants to return Ruto to ICC

caleb kositany

Jubilee Deputy Secretary-General Caleb Kositany has accused the ‘deep state’ of manufacturing evidence meant to block Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 State House bid. – By Collins Osanya.

The Soy legislator was speaking at a function in Eldoret on Tuesday, 10 October where he accused the ‘deep state’ of leveling unfair competition against Ruto.

“Yesterday four police officers sent from Nairobi collected all the 2007 post election violence files from Eldoret. They are now looking for propaganda from the Eldoret files with which to charge the DP and other leaders from Rift Valley,” Kositany stated.

The MP went further and questioned why files on the post-poll violence witnessed in other parts of the country were not collected. “People fought in Naivasha, Nairobi, Mombasa and even Kisumu. Why are you just collecting the Eldoret file? Also collect the files on Kisumu and Nairobi.”

Kositany further cautioned the state from setting in motion activities which would spark violence in the country adding, “Kenyans are cleverer this time. Even clever than some of their leaders. Let Ruto campaign for presidency in peace.”

New order

Last week, the National Security Advisory Committee NSAC stated new provisions of the Public Order Act meant to foster peaceful relations in the country.

The guidelines have not been well received by the DP’s political camp after Ruto’s tour of Nyamira county was disrupted by a contingent of police officers.

On Sunday, 11 October, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga hosted 300 Kikuyu elders plus youth and women from the community at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Jaramogi’s final resting place, in Bondo, Siaya County.

Although Raila steered off politics, speakers during the event didn’t with Jeremiah Kioni and Peter Kenneth who led the delegation promising a collaboration in the near future.

“In 2002, we had the National Rainbow Coalition that saw Mwai Kibaki elected as President. In 2007, there was a grand coalition government after the contested presidential election, while post-2017 elections gave birth to the handshake. We have enough experience on why we always fight and we now have a solution to our problems,” Kioni revealed.

However, the DP echoed Kioni’s statements on unity when he hosted a delegation of Luo clergymen at his Sugoi home on Monday, 12 October.

“We must continue the conversation on building bridges of friendship so that we can work towards a better Kenya that has no cadres. No divisions,” Ruto stated before dismissing those asking him not to hold political meetings across the country.

The gathering was also ordered to adhere to the health protocols issued by the Ministry of Health in regards to Covid-19.

Further the organizers  were urged to work with police officers to ensure that law and order is maintained.

Otherwise organizers would be held responsible for any acts of lawlessness and disorder that may arise from the function.

Elsewhere a planned  fundraiser at a church in Nyamasebe  was also approved by OCS Elam Esendi.

“This office received your above letter notifying your intention to hold a Sadaka collection in respect of Nyamasebe District.

“This is to notify you that your request has been granted and you will cooperate with the police to ensure that security is maintained throughout the function,” read the letter from Esendi.

Last week Thursday October 8 police blocked the two functions on account of a public order act, citing lack of compliance.

Police dispersed Ruto’s supporters at Kebirigo High School and Nyangoge Primary School grounds in Nyamira County on Thursday, October 8 leading to their postponement.

IMF and World Bank must lend more to Africa’s stricken economies, critics say

Ghana’s minister of finance, Ken Ofori Ata, said that at this week’s World Bank and IMF annual meetings much more needs to be done to help economies cope with falling revenues, rising expenditures and increasing debt distress.

Ofori Ata appealed to the IMF to issue more of its special drawing rights (SDRs) to low-income African countries who have opted out of the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI), which offers relief on official bilateral debt service payments.

DSSI-eligible African countries like Nigeria and Kenya have opted out of the initiative to preserve access to international capital markets.

“The IMF’s lending capacity should be doubled to $2.5tn. European countries have some $260bn in special drawing rights for which they have little use and could easily lend on to African countries. The US is opposing the issuance of new SDRs altogether,” he wrote in a Financial Times editorial on Monday.

Speaking at the Financial Times Africa Summit, Donald Kaberuka, the African Union’s special envoy on Covid-19, said that while the world stepped up to support poorer countries during the global financial crisis, it hasn’t yet delivered comparable support for Africa following the pandemic.

Massive liquidity support is needed to ensure poverty, inequality and unemployment due to Covid-19 is averted, said Vera Songwe, the UN under-secretary general and executive secretary of UNECA.

“We can’t lose the gains made over the past two decades. More liquidity is needed to put a floor on economic depression facing emerging and frontier markets. Africa is resilient in 2020. Without additional liquidity support it may not be resilient in 2021.”

Responding to the comments, IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva said African countries need to borrow from the international market to finance their economies.

“Over the last couple of months many emerging markets have been able to tap into low interest rates because of the massive liquidity they have returned to markets successfully. No sub-Saharan African country has gone to market yet.”

IMF lending to Africa has increased significantly from an annual pre-pandemic average of $4.2bn to $26bn given to the continent since the pandemic so far, $16bn of which went to sub-Saharan Africa, she said.

“This is on average ten times more than we would have done in a year because we recognise that lack of access to financing is putting Africa in a difficult place.”

It’s up to African countries to be more transparent to make themselves attractive to private investors, she added. “That is a job for the countries themselves and for their partners.”

Since the outbreak began, Africa’s three largest economies (Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa) have received combined assistance of $15.5bn from the IMF to meet urgent balance of payments needs stemming from the pandemic, with South Africa making history by taking its first loan from the Fund.

The World Bank pledged to lend $160bn by June 2021 to help countries deal with the effects of the pandemic. Researchers at the Center for Global Development have found that the Bank is on track to miss its lending target by $81bn.

The IMF predicts economic growth on the continent will drop 7% this year for the first time in decades. Africa needs $1.2trn through to 2023 to recover from the damage caused by the pandemic, $900bn of which will be needed to shore up the finances of governments in sub-Saharan Africa.

African countries have over 1.5m cases of Covid-19 with 38,000 deaths, the African Union reports.
