Ruthless Uhuru, deep state ‘cremate’ Ruto’s 2022 dream

By Henry Kimoli Email:Harrykimoli@gmail.com

The big one has spoken. And spoken Loudly.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, in an elaborate interview targeting Deputy President William Ruto officially withdrew his support for him.
Uhuru, lately a replica of old Jomo less the fly-whisk, dared Ruto to resign from his position, if he so wished.
And with this, the tyranny of the GEMA votes, which Ruto has been drooling over has evaporated.
The DP now has to bear the consequences of the blatant presidential snub and the fear of the unknown, often, and silently inflicted by the deep state a.k.a the faceless system whose modus operandi no one seems to understand.
This is the chalice that Ruto must partake. The same bitter herbs swallowed by Kalonzo Musyoka in 2013…and served on a plate provided by Ruto.

Like is always the case, Ruto’s supporters believe he has a solution. What they have reckoned with is
long before Uhuru trashed the GEMA-Kalenjin political deal, the deep state must have analysed and played out possible consequences and scenarios.
Based on the dint of the 2013 political deal between the duo, Ruto’s political goose is cooked.
Then, Uhuruto, backed by the system elected to isolate the Kamba
and the Luo community votes.
The equation in the Luhya nation then invoked bankrolling Musalia Mudavadi to side step Raila in Western Kenya. It worked.

Not only did Mudavadi dock 700,000 plus votes from the Raila basket, but he also reignited his political career.
The math was simple. GEMA plus Kalenjin votes, and the master stroke of wasted Mudavadi votes was enough to ride Uhuruto to State House.
Now the boot is in the other foot. GEMA, with the Kamba , Luo, the Coastals and a Mudavadi spoiler stab at the Presidency will leave Ruto with meagre 4 million votes plus. Mainly from his Kalenjin nation.
Kalenjins, since former President Moi’s tenure in office, have developed a false sense of entitlement to the Presidency. Like the GEMA before them, they reckon other communities owe them a political duty of care.
This is the constituent and community mentality that Ruto has perfected since 2005. He will pay his last dime to retain it.

Interrogation of past voting waves has established that the Kalenjin will never vote for a cause that has nothing for them. The only communities known to have done that in Kenya are the Kamba, Kisiii and the Mijikenda.
And so Kalenjin votes, like those of the Kamba in 2007 and 2013 will not matter in 2022.
They will tally as genuine spoilt votes; whose only value addition is to cement democracy and elect devolution leaders.
This scorched voter strategy was developed by Ruto himself, after then Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka refused to back the Uhuruto project. History, they say repeats itself.
So, is there a way back to Uhuru way for Ruto?

First things. Uhuru is not a malicious politician. He can allow his Deputy to the scheme of things if he plays ball.
Notwithstanding the fact that the ball and the rules are domiciled in Uhuru’s pockets.
Based on Uhuru’s body language, the deep state wants Ruto to defer his Presidential ambition to after 2022.
Can Ruto buy in? The jury is still out there. But the experience of past Vice Presidents will come in handy for the Sugow born politician.
At 54 years of age, time, abbreviated T, is on his side. Rescheduling his presidential ambition is not only sensible, but will also not precipitate a crisis.
Being the political fox, he is, Uhuru has given a fake impression that there is no soft landing for his deputy.
This strategy aimed at wearing Ruto down, through utilisation of known political tools.
Perhaps it is time for the DP to wake up from his self-imposed power stupor and botanise his way to the epicentre.

What then is next for Ruto?
Based on the past, Ruto and his supporters can have their pick.

  1. The Mwai Kibaki route
He was President Moi’s Vice President between 1979 and 1989.
Moi demoted him, humiliated him on many occasions and even refused to attend the burial of his father, Kibaki wa Githinji in 1983. Kibaki remained loyal to Moi and his White Cup Lager until 2002 when the deep State eased his way to the Presidency.

DP Ruto can take this path and bid his time until 2027. Because 2022 is an unrealistic target as things now look. In the meantime, he can warn the official opposition benches like Kibaki and Uhuru before him.

  1. George Saitoti
He was happy to replace Kibaki and the Central Province power barons to the Vice President slot. The system allowed him to accumulate loads of cash in readiness for a stub at the presidency.

During the Goldenberg debate in Parliament in 1993, Saitoti famously said everyone should carry his cross in the Goldenberg proof. He was being smart. The system noticed that he harboured an escapist mentality, an NGO mentality. Moi, the ruthless operator advertised for his replacement.

He got a candidate in a young Uhuru Kenyatta. But the tackless Gatundu South residents, led by Moses Muihia and Moses Kuria delayed the coronation in 1997 by refusing to vote him as MP.

3.Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka
He remains one of Kenya’s foremost political gentlemen. He is unassuming. He should have succeeded President Moi in 2002, but he lacked a credible broker to navigate him through the deep state.
He has hardened well politically, never controversial and has remained loyal to the system: he never seeks to rattle the established order of things and is always ready to be led.
For this, he is ahead of Ruto in the ranking of the deep state to one day rule Kenya.

4.Raila Odinga
The most trusted politician by the Kenya masses. He has a fanatical following by the youth and the elderly. Until 2007, the Middle Class never trusted him.
In terms of ratings, Raila Odinga has a fanatical following across the country. But somehow this following has not translated to votes. Plainly put, Raila’s presence in any shopping Centre in rural Kenya will cause a stampede.
But one unfortunate incident in 1982 has been his Achilles wheel. There is no evidence yet about allegations that he connived to overthrow the Government during the 1982 coup.
But the allegations have been a major drawback to Raila. Has this been swept under the carpet or is it a wild card for 2022? Keep it Uzalendo news.

Burundi’s First Lady airlifted to Kenya after testing positive for Covid-19

Burundi’s First Lady is currently admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi after testing positive for Covid-19.
Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza is said to have been airlifted to Kenya on an AMREF plane.
A Rwandan local daily indicates that she was accompanied by three bodyguards who also tested positive for Coronavirus.
“The light plane took off from Bujumbura Airport at 11.25 pm. The lights at the airport were turned off. Airport workers and police were asked to clear just before the arrival of Mrs Bucumi, who spent a total of 20 minutes on tarmac,” a source said.
Her condition remains unknown and it is still not clear how she gained entry in to the country following strict rules only those who test negative to the disease should be allowed.
Nkurunziza has received global criticism for not doing enough to combat the spread of the disease. Bars and restaurants are still open in Burundi.
Earlier this month the government asked four World Health Organization (WHO) to leave for interfering with the management of Coronavirus in Burundi.

Twitter hides Trump tweet for ‘glorifying violence’

TRUMP TWITTER

Twitter has hidden one of President Donald Trump’s tweets from his profile, saying it violates rules about glorifying violence (By BBC)

But instead of being deleted, it has been replaced with a warning and can be viewed by clicking on it.

The warning says “Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.”

It is the latest in an escalating row between Twitter and the White House.

Mr Trump was tweeting about the US city of Minneapolis, which has seen consecutive nights of protests following the death of a black man in police custody.

The president said he would “send in the National Guard”, and followed that up with a warning that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

That second tweet was hidden by Twitter for “glorifying violence”.

Twitter’s policy of adding a warning to, rather than deleting, tweets that break its rules when it comes to major public figures was announced in mid-2019. But the social network has never used it on Mr Trump – nor deleted any of his tweets before.

“We’ve taken action in the interest of preventing others from being inspired to commit violent acts, but have kept the tweet on Twitter because it is important that the public still be able to see the tweet given its relevance to ongoing matters of public importance.”

It comes hours after President Trump signed an executive order aimed at removing some of the legal protections given to social media platforms.

Earlier this week, Twitter used its fact- checking function to attach warnings to the President’s tweets for the first time. That led the President to threaten to “shut down” the social networks over allegedly stifling free speech.

Italy’s Serie A will return on 20 June

Serie A was suspended on 9 March, with Juventus leading the table by a point with 12 rounds of matches remaining.

Players returned to individual training earlier this month before group sessions restarted this week.

On 20 May the Italian football federation (FIGC) set a 20 August deadline for finishing the 2019-20 season.

The FIGC also said it intended for the top three divisions to be played to a conclusion and that if any of them should restart and then stop again, a shorter alternative of a play-off would have to be devised.

Massimo Cellino, who owns Serie A bottom side Brescia, said resuming was a “crazy decision”.

“It’s too much for the players,” he told BBC World Service’s World Football show.

“We stopped [training] for two months. It is dangerous to restart it playing three games a week. So I’m worried about injuries and the hot weather which is going to be terrible in Italy more than Germany.”

But Udinese and Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong said: “It’s lifted everybody’s spirits, as long as we can do it in the right way without too many risks and setting the right example for the country, I think it’s a good thing to be doing.”

Andy Murray will return to action on June 23 as part of a six-day tournament organized by brother Jamie

Jamie Murray, the seven-time Grand Slam doubles and mixed doubles champion, has helped put on a behind-closed-doors tournament called ‘Schroders Battle of the Brits’.

It will see the Murray brothers and the likes of Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans play each other at the Lawn Tennis Association’s Roehampton Base.

The tournament, which will crown singles and doubles champions, will be screened live on Amazon Prime and raise a minimum of £100,000 for the NHS.

With the ATP and WTA seasons on ice due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Battle of the Brits will bring live tennis back to British fans in a month which should have seen the Wimbledon Championships take place.

“The last few months have been incredibly challenging times for everyone and we see this event as our way of giving back,” Jamie Murray said.

“A lot of work has gone in to make sure this could happen and we are very excited to be able to bring an action-packed week of tennis, while raising valuable funds for NHS heroes to say thank you for the amazing work they have done.”

English premier league is back

The 2019/20 Premier League season will resume on June 17; it was confirmed on Thursday.

There has been no action in the top-flight since early March, with all sport put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But the Premier League is now gearing up to return, with all 20 clubs welcoming their squads back to training and setting a date for its resumption.

Here’s all you need to know about the restart…

project Restart’ was initially planned for June 12, but clubs have now voted on Wednesday, June 17 for the season to resume – subject to meeting all safety requirements.

Aston Villa will host Sheffield United on that date, while Manchester City will welcome Arsenal.

Those are both rearranged games, and will mean all 20 clubs have played 29 matches heading into the weekend of June 19-21, when the rest of the top-flight will be in action once again.

Players have been back in training since May. Strict social distancing guidelines were in place initially, but this week clubs voted to reintroduce contact training.

All games will be held behind closed doors at the clubs’ own stadiums. There are 92 matches still to play in total.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said on Thursday, May 28: “Today we have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday June 17.

“But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority.

“Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches.

“The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters. It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home. We will continue to work step-by-step and in consultation with all our stakeholders as we move towards resuming the 2019-20 season.”

When will the games kick-off?

New staggered kick-off times will be used for the remaining matches.

Games on a Friday will kick off at 8pm, while on Saturday the slots will be 12.30pm, 3pm, 5.30pm and 8pm.

Sunday matches will kick off at either 12pm, 2pm, 4.30pm and 7pm, with Monday games starting at 8pm.

Midweek games on Tuesdays and Wednesday will kick off at either 6pm or 8pm.

The exact fixture dates will be confirmed in due course after discussions with TV and radio broadcasters.

Will all the games be on TV?

Yes! All 92 matches will be broadcast live by the Premier League’s partners – Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport and Amazon Prime.

Sky will show the majority of the games – 64 in total – with 25 of the games being made free-to-air, including Everton vs Liverpool on the first full weekend back.

BT Sport will show 20 of the games live on their platform.

The BBC will show four live matches, alongside their usual Match of the Day highlight programs – the first time the channel will televise live Premier League football since the competition’s founding in 1992. Amazon Prime will also have four live matches.

Could the Premier League season still be voided?

That looks highly unlikely as things stand.

The league are desperate to play the remaining games as the cost of cancelling it could be up to £1billion.

Sky, BT and overseas rights holders have already paid the Premier League for their full season’s broadcast rights, despite a quarter of the campaign left to play. So scrapping the campaign will mean broadcasters will look to recoup millions.

However, there is still a small possibility the season could be scrapped should there be a second wave of the virus or serious safety issues become apparent

How does the Premier League table look?

Liverpool are way out in front – an incredible 25 points ahead of nearest challengers Manchester City – and are just two wins away from winning the Premier League for the first time.

Leicester are on course to secure Champions League qualification while there is set to be a big battle for the final top four spot, with Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolves, Sheffield United, Tottenham and Arsenal all still in with a shot.

At the bottom, Norwich look doomed to relegation, while Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Watford, West Ham and Brighton are all battling for survival.

“We want loyal members to work closely with leadership of the House to ensure that reforms are achieved,” he said

The Minority Whip Junet Mohammed said party discipline is key in driving agendas in the parliament and hence the changes had to be made.

“Parliament is a house of political parties and coalitions. Party disciplne is therefore critical to the proper conduct of parliamentary business.” He stated.

The meeting was attended by 108 of the 135 Nasa MPs from ODM, Wiper, Amani National Congress and Ford Kenya. It is not known if NASA will go the Jubilee way, and axe members who did not attend the meeting.

President Kenyatta calls for solidarity as world leaders discuss post Covid-19 recovery

President Uhuru Kenyatta has emphasized the need for global solidarity in response to Covid-19 saying all stakeholders need to come together so as to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic– By PSCU

The President said Kenya is doing her best to not only slow down the spread of the virus in the country but to also support the region and the continent in dealing with the health crisis.

“At the national level, we are doing our best. Beyond our national commitments, at regional and global levels, we have contributed within regional inter-governmental, continental African Union efforts,” President Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta spoke last evening during a virtual high level meeting on development financing in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic convened by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his Jamaican counterpart Andrew Holness and the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterress.

The Kenyan President told the meeting attended by a cross-section of world leaders including several Heads of State that the current health crisis will constrict global growth this year leading to financial market volatility and increased debt risk especially in developing countries.

“The economic and financial shocks associated with Covid-19 such as disruptions to industrial production and supply chains, falling commodity prices, financial market volatility and rising insecurity have derailed the already tepid economic growth and development,” the President said.

To address the socioeconomic challenges resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, President Kenyatta said the global community needs to focus on the implementation of the United Nations Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Specifically, the Kenyan Head of State advised world leaders to concentrate on expansion of global liquidity, addressing debt vulnerability especially for developing nations and enhancement of external financing to ensure inclusive growth and continued job creation.

The Kenyan leader also proposed the expansion of the fiscal space and promotion of domestic resource mobilization by preventing illicit financial flows.

On private sector participation, President Kenyatta pitched for partnerships that help build indigenous local production and forestall the need for long supply chains.

In his capacity as the current President-in-Office of the Organization of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), President Kenyatta announced plans to host an extraordinary summit to deliberate on the effects of Covid-19 on the people and the economies of member countries.

Speaking on behalf of the African Union, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Covid-19 is a real threat to collective ability of the global community to achieve SDGs especially for developing countries.

The South African leader called for innovative approaches in the deployment of resources in support of private sector and the Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) which he termed as the engines for wealth and job creation.

In his closing remarks, UN Secretary General Guterress unveiled a 6-point road map he said would help the world overcome the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Guterress said expansion of liquidity in the global economy, addressing debt vulnerabilities of developing nations and the increased participation of private sector creditors will help provide timely and effective solutions.

Other measures advanced by the UN boss include enhanced financing for inclusive growth and job creation, expansion of the fiscal space and promotion of domestic resource mobilization as well as alignment of recovery policies with SDGs.

World Rugby rejects plan for invitational tournament

World Rugby has rejected a proposal for an unofficial World Cup event next year aimed at boosting the game’s finances after the coronavirus stoppage.

Former Rugby Football Union CEO Francis Baron had put forward a plan for a six-week 16-team invitational tournament in the UK and Ireland which he said could raise up to 250 million pounds shared among all unions involved.

“World Rugby does not intend to pursue such a proposal,” the governing body said in a statement on Wednesday.

“All stakeholders continue to progress productive discussions regarding the immediate global COVID-19 financial relief strategy and international rugby calendar optimization, both of which will further the success of Rugby World Cup 2023 in France,” the statement added.

The global rugby calendar is in a state of flux due to the pandemic which has seen most cross border and domestic club competitions suspended since March.

Scheduled tours to the southern hemisphere are all cancelled and the postponements have placed financial strain on most rugby nations, with even the leading countries predicting multi-million dollar losses in 2020 due to reduced television, commercial and ticket revenue.

New Zealand has confirmed that a domestic competition for its Super Rugby teams will start next month, while South Africa and Australia are making similar plans.

The All Blacks were due to host Wales and Scotland in July but may now look at playing more games against neighbors’ Australia later in the year with COVID-19 cases in both countries having been reduced to a trickle.
