Uhuru To Chair First Cabinet Meeting in Over a Year

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to chair a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 12, to deliberate on the government agenda after more than a year’s hiatus.

According to sources close to the situation, the meeting will focus on key national issues just three months before a new government takes office.

The last Cabinet meeting took place on February 18, 2021, when the President broke with tradition by inviting Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS) and Principal Secretaries to discuss Jubilee’s Big Four Agenda and Vision 2030 flagship projects.

According to Chapter 9 article 152 of the Constitution, a Cabinet includes the President, the Deputy President, the Attorney-General, and not fewer than 14 and not more than 22 Cabinet Secretaries.

All eyes will be on Deputy President William Ruto to see if he will attend the meeting after months of public spats and confrontations with his boss.

In the absence of Cabinet meetings, ministers have been attending Cabinet sub-committee routine meetings on Tuesdays, chaired by Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, to discuss government business.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has previously faced harsh criticism for a lack of accountability in his government, with others pointing out that some of the issues would be ironed out in Cabinet meetings, which should be held every Thursday.

Currently, the government has introduced 19 Bills to the National Assembly, three of which were introduced immediately after the last Cabinet meeting.
