Raila turns heat to the Church over BBI u-turn

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has lashed out at the clergy for their wavering stance on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) recommendations. – By Gerald Gekara.

The ODM leader castigated the leaders for changing tune on the BBI, backing it in the initial stages only to oppose it when the signature collection process begun.

“Where were they when we were giving views to the Steering committee. This process has been on for two years. Otherwise you will be double speaking like those other politicians.” Raila said.

Addressing the faithful at the ACK Cathedral Church in Kisumu on Sunday, Raila dared the opposing groups to challenge the process at the referendum as it is within their right to do so.

The statements comes after various leaders laid bare their intent to oppose the BBI over concerns of non-inclusion of their amendments.

A section of bishops under the Kenya Council of Church Alliances and Ministries have threatened to rally their followers to reject the BBI report.

The clerics insisted that the report must incorporate other views before it is taken to the people in a referendum.

Raila said the BBI report has taken two years to compile and deliberate, and giving room for further ammendments will result in a delayed economic recovery process.

Elsewhere William Ruto continued to urge the BBI taskforce to allow Kenyans to deliberate the process, and include referendum questions inorder to allow Kenyans to choose what they want.

He cautioned Raila Odinga against agitating for the formation of a Yes/No contest, saying the move will divide Kenyans further.
