The Music Copyright Society Of Kenya has broken its silence on the issue where Sauti Sol is threatening to sue Azimio leader Raila Odinga for infringing his copyright.

MCSK Chief Officer Dr. Ezekiel Mutua in a statement over the issue said the band had subscribed to its laws and regulations, therefore falling within the public performance lincensing approval that politicians were given.

“Regarding the claim by Sauti Sol and statement by KECOBO, MCSK wishes to clarify that the license issued covers both performing, mechanical rights & synchronization. We thank the Raila Odinga Presidential Campaign team for complying with the copyright law and urge others to pay.”

Dr. Mutua further bashed KECOBO for misinterpreting a licensing clause that allegedly gave Sauti Sol a lifeline in their quest to sue Raila Odinga.

“This is a totally misleading and misguided statement by KECOBO. We licensed the Raila Odinga Presidential campaign using the existing tariffs gazetted by the Govt. Our members, including Sauti Sol, have assigned their rights to MCSK to administer copyright on their behalf.”

Since the tiff begun, Sauti Sol has been under heavy criticism that has also seen their music channels taking the heat.

As of this evening their subscribers are 903K, down from 905K when the debacle started.

Raila Odinga has since apologized for the issue, instead applauding Sauti Sol for their music.
