Speaker Wetangula Suspends Seven MPs Over Gross Misconduct

The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, on Thursday, June 8, suspended seven Members of Parliament for violating the Standing Orders.

His decision was compelled after lawmakers disrupted the afternoon session.

Wetangula found the seven MPs guilty of gross misconduct after they hurled insults, defied his orders, and forced the House to take a 15-minute break.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo and Nominated MP Sabina Chege were among those suspended from House proceedings for two weeks.

Others include Rozaah Buyu (2 weeks), TJ Kajwang (2 weeks), Fatuma Mnyanzi (5 days), Catherine Omanyo (5 days), and Joyce Kamene (2 sittings).

The seven were among the Azimio la Umoja MPs who objected to Wetang’ula’s decision on the position of Deputy Minority Whip.

According to the Speaker, Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege would continue to serve as Minority Whip until the cases she filed were heard and decided.

The ruling enraged a section of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, causing MPs to erupt in uncontrollable shouts, songs, and dances.
