Three robbery suspects were arrested after using a matatu to entice passengers before robbing them of their phones and other belongings.

Vincent Obongo (38), Edward Kimani (22) and Mohamed Idi Ndote (27) were arrested at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday after police officers on patrol intercepted the vehicle and recovered 11 phones.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) the men were operating PSV vehicles when they were apprehended by officers on patrol along Mombasa Road shortly after a robbery incident.

“The robbery suspects were arrested by a contingent of officers on patrol at the Nyayo stadium roundabout at 2 am this morning, after they robbed passengers in a matatu of their mobile phones and other valuables,” read the statement.

The DCI has advised the public to be on the alert for such vehicles, particularly those transporting passengers on routes different from those listed on the vehicle’s body.

Meanwhile, DCI Lang’ata officers contacted the owners of the phones recovered from the accused.

As the police proceeded to arraign the perpetrators in court, the victims were requested to record their statements.
