Women charged with abetting and aiding Female Genital Mutilation in Bomet County

Nine women charged in Bomet with abetting female genital mutilation seven others charged with undergoing the outlawed cut

Nine women have been charged with abetting and aiding Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Bomet County. Seven other women have also been charged with undergoing the outlawed cut.

The women were arrested on Friday night among them eight girls aged between 21 and 24 years who had already undergone the cut, a circumciser and a caregiver.

The eight girls were taken to the Longisa hospital today for examination before being arraigned. 

Chepalungu sub county commander Nelson Maasai said that the suspects were arrested after a tip off from the public. He said that FGM is widely practiced in the area and police are on the look out to ensure perpetrators are arrested and arraigned.
