Yaya Hotel Manager: Tuju, Salat Visited The ‘Cherera 4’

New information has emerged in the hearings against suspended IEBC Commissioner Irene Massit and three former commissioners known collectively as the “Cherera Four” following allegations that they met high-profile Azimio operatives at Yaya Apartments in Kilimani between August 15 and 17.

The suspended commissioner is being investigated, along with former Vice Chair Juliana Cherera and ex-commissioners Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi, for their conduct after they disputed the presidential election results declared by IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati in August.

The accommodations manager at Yaya apartments, Simon Miller, confirmed to the Justice Aggrey Muchelule-led tribunal on Thursday that the four commissioners were booked into the premise between the aforementioned dates and stayed in rooms 21, 23, and 27 with their security detail.

According to the visitor’s logs, the commissioners were visited by prominent leaders allied with the Azimio la Umoja coalition on the day they checked in, including Executive Director Raphael Tuju and Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat.

CCTV footage also showed Massit and the hotel’s chief of security entering a lift from the basement.

Miller stated that the commissioners arrived on the evening of August 15 and left on the afternoon of August 19, and that they did not provide personal documents or personally sign the log books upon arrival.

“The commissioners did not sign the booking but their security details are the ones who signed. We had asked two of them to sign the documents on behalf of the rest and did not want to spend much time at the reception. Two payments were done via M-Pesa and one in cash by Edwin Ogwe,” Miller said.

Miller noted that several hotel employees who may have seen the commissioners during their three-day stay are no longer working at the premises.
